When you want to transport the family far, far away from the stresses of modern-day urban life, make a beeline for Torrevecchia Teatina in Abruzzo. At Belvedere Tenda Camping, a nearly wild site (‘nearly’ wild as there are a few simple facilities), you’ll all be able to relax and – best of all – sleep under a blanket of stars on clear nights.
The partially shaded pitches are spread across two hectares of land, including olive groves and gardens with sea views, and Adriatic beaches are a mere 10 minutes’ drive away. Basic amenities include a shower room with a flushing loo, and a washing-up sink to take care of any dishes.
Tucked among the trees are a small play area for kids, hammocks for some serious chilling in the sun and picnic tables for alfresco dining. The small and informal restaurant serves local dishes on its terrace, which has stellar views down to the coast, and if you’d rather go down the self-catering route, the shops of Francavilla al Mare are 10 minutes in the car.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.- No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Local attractions
If you’re after days on the beach, you have plenty of choice. Bag sun loungers and bask in the sun at Lido La Murena (10 minutes’ drive), where there’s a local seafood restaurant, or teach younger kids to swim in the calm and shallow sea at sandy Francavilla al Mare beach (both 10 minutes’ drive). For a less manicured vibe, head for Punta Ferruccio beach (25 minutes), which you might well have all to yourselves.
Hikers can head inland to the woodland trails of Riserva Naturale Orientata Feudo Ugni (55 minutes), or tackle the craggy peaks and deep canyons in the untamed Parco Nazionale della Maiella (an hour).
Too much like hard work? The castle-baggers among you can tour medieval Castello Aragonese in Ortona (25 minutes), and then visit the baroque-era Cathedral of St Tommaso Apostolo to admire the eponymous saint’s relics in the crypt. See where controversial 20th-century poet Gabriele D’Annunzio lived at his former home in Pescara (half an hour), and check out an excellent art collection at the town’s Museo dell’Ottocento Fondazione di Persio-Pallotta.
