  • Family-friendly site in the shadow of the Thrypti Range in Crete
  • Ha Gorge 20 minutes on foot; Ierapetra 15 minutes’ drive
  • Private outdoor shower; communal kitchen; washing machine
The dramatic landscape of the Ha Gorge is the background to your holiday when you stay at HA Camp, a budget family-friendly site on a farm to the west of the rocky Thrypti Range in Crete. The impressive sight of the narrow fissure (which is just over a kilometre from the site, about 20 minutes on foot) might invite active types to undertake challenging climbs or perhaps have a go at abseiling; meanwhile, more relaxed visitors should not forget their binoculars, for this is an area that attracts a range of migratory birds. Level earth pitches come with their own private outdoor shower and a faucet with drinking water, as well as electricity; in addition, there are a few communal amenities all gathered around a central hub. They include a well-maintained toilet/shower block, a washing machine (for which there is an additional charge) and a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator where you can store your dinner supplies; you may have sourced these in the nearby village of Pachia Ammos (10 minutes’ drive) or in Ierapetra (15 minutes). And if you or the kids fancy the idea of cooking under the stars, the owners can supply a barbecue. In between climbs and mountain hikes, you might well want to have some beach time. Thankfully, this being Crete, you’re never very far from the coast, whether you head north to pebbly Kamini Beach (10 minutes), on Mirabello Bay, or south to Livadi Beach (15 minutes), with its coarse sand. Wherever you end up, though, you’re likely to find gorgeous, crystal-clear waters.

Local attractions

In addition to several beaches, Ierapetra has a remarkable archaeological museum with a collection of items excavated in the vicinity of the town. If you’re more into active pursuits than history, several outfits at the marina arrange cruises to Chrysi Island, which is renowned for its sandy stretches, like Golden Beach and Vages Beach. The Monastery of St George (45 minutes’ drive), on a steep slope of Selinari Canyon, was first established in the 16th century and subsequently rebuilt. The complex includes two colourful churches in grey and red stone with ornate gilded interiors, and a bell tower. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century, Kazarma Fortress sits on a hill overlooking Sitia (55 minutes). This former defensive structure now hosts cultural events during the summer months. Seafood restaurants line Sitia’s pretty marina, to the south of which is a sandy beach.
