Nature, rest and recreation are what's in store at Campingplatz Am Waldbad, a peaceful and well-maintained campsite just outside the village of Breitenbach in southern Thuringia. Guests staying at this relaxing site, which is surrounded by lush forest and green fields, will find themselves far from loud, noisy roads and pollution in a real wildlife haven. The village is best known as the gateway to the Thüringer Wald, a UNESCO-listed 17,000-hectare biosphere reserve that makes a fabulous location for walks and bike rides on well-marked trails running through the forests of the low mountain range. Families will find that they're very welcome at this site, as there are several facilities that are great for kids, including an outdoor swimming pool, a play area and a small petting zoo where they can spend some quality time with the cuddly animals. Campingplatz Am Waldbad also provides good practical amenities, including toilets, warm showers, a washing-up area and a washing machine. Both campfires and barbecues are allowed here, but if you fancy heading out for a meal instead you can wander down to one of the three restaurants in Breitenbach. To stock up on supplies at a local supermarket or to dine out at a wider range of eateries, you can also easily head into Schleusingen, a larger town 10 minutes away by car.

  • No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
  • A charge of €0.50 (£0.43) applies for the use of the shower.

Goats, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs were a wonderful addition.

Disliked: Showers were very poor and just spray/spluttered. 50c for 3 mins.

Liked: what a pretty site in amongst all of the trees. Nice location and nice site, nothing in the village however this is an excellent site for hikers. Facilities at the top were absolutely spotless and bar prices were very good. Animals all look well looked after.

Disliked: I know site specified cash only but would have preferred a card payment but only a minor thing

Der Preis stimmt auch netter Besitzer, Brötchenservice ,saubere Sanitäre Anlagen, Stromanschluss,
Frischwasser ,Entsorgung Chemietoilette alles vorhanden.

Disliked: Die Grauwasserentsorgung ist etwas umständlich aber 👌

Liked: Very well located for rural walks but also close to a decent sized town. clean facilities and a nice open camping field on a hill overlooking a picturesque view. And you can choose your own pitch location.

Disliked: I did not feel especially welcome here, either by the staff or the other campers, but this may have been due to the language barrier. They only accept cash as payment, which these days is unusual and inconvenient if you don’t have cash handy, as it will mean you have to find an atm in the town.

Liked: The site is situated in a very picturesque location, near to many lovely walks. The tent field was also very clean.

Disliked: I didn’t feel especially welcome here, although potentially that was due to a language barrier. The site listing states there is wifi at the pitches however I struggled to get anything as the tent field was on a slope and it didn’t work in the toilet block either! Also, the toilet block is really far away and the water pressure in the showers is really awful so very difficult to wash hair. It seemed that the tent field had been located way too far away from the facilities considering most caravans/motorhomes have a toilet.

Local attractions

Your first outing should certainly be into the Thüringer Wald – you can walk or bike there easily from the site to pick up marked trails through forest and up hills, taking in rivers, waterfalls and lots of green views along the way. For other ways to stretch your legs, there are several towns and cities that are well worth wandering around. Coburg (half an hour’s drive) is a good place to start, for the steep walk up to the medieval Veste Coburg fortress. The historic centre of Bamberg (an hour) is another good choice, as is Weimar (an hour and 15 minutes), where you can take a stroll around museums dedicated to Goethe and Schiller. Travelling families with kids to entertain may like to look instead towards Suhl (25 minutes), which has a zoo and a bowling alley, or plan a day out among the rides, adventure playgrounds and fairytale-themed attractions at Erlebnispark Schloss Thurn (an hour and 15 minutes). Or how about a real-life castle? Schloss Bertholdsburg is only 10 minutes’ drive away…
