Looking for a lovely location for a nature-filled holiday? Here’s a good spot in Rhineland-Palatinate: peaceful Camping im Eichenwald is in the middle of an ancient oak and beech forest surrounded by meadows and green farmland. It’s just the spot for a relaxed outdoor holiday with your partner, your pals or your family (which, in this case, includes any dogs that may be part of your pack).
Getting out to explore is all part of the fun here, so you may like to hire bikes on site and head out into the countryside on two wheels. Alternatively, there are hikes in the Auenlandweg area (five minutes’ drive), guided canoe tours and fly fishing on the river Sieg, and paragliding in the Westerwald mountains (25 minutes).
Back on site, while the kids make new friends in the playground, you can set up the barbecue for dinner, having sourced your provisions from the shops in Gebhardshain (five minutes), Wissen or Scheuerfeld (both 10 minutes) – and stored them in the communal fridge. If you don’t fancy cooking, take a table at the on-site restaurant, which serves hearty German classics, including schnitzel variations and currywurst, plus some rather tempting waffles.
To preserve its fabulous surroundings, this site has installed several eco-friendly practices. For example, its modern and impeccably maintained toilet block (which includes facilities for disabled guests) has a heating system that runs on renewable materials and solar-powered electricity. Other facilities include a launderette and a chemical disposal point.

Local attractions
This is a lovely area for walking or cycling, but if you’d like to take a bird’s-eye view of the scenery you’ll need to head to Förder- und Aussichtsturm Barbaraturm (25 minutes’ drive), a former mining tower where you can climb up 20 metres for splendid views across the Westerwald.
Kids who like to climb can also try out their skills at Panarbora Park (40 minutes); back down at ground level there are adventurous activities like bumper cars and mini diggers at Wildpark Bad Marienberg (half an hour), along with a good variety of animals including bison, deer and llamas. If they grow fond of the woolly beasts, maybe you’d all like to head out on a walk with Alpakas des Westens (25 minutes).
If it’s heritage that’s your thing, make visits to Schloss Schönstein (10 minutes), Marienstatt Abbey (half an hour) and the recreated rural village at the Landschaftsmuseum Westerwald open-air museum (35 minutes). The vintage motorbikes at Westerwald-Museum für Motorrad und Technik (25 minutes) are also well worth a visit.
