Fond of waking up to scenic views over water and quiet surroundings that make it easy to properly relax and recharge? So it is at Lower Saxony's Stover Strand Camping, a 12-hectare site directly on the banks of the vast river Elbe and with its very own swimming beach. It's also – get your chuffed face ready – only 35 minutes' drive from Germany's second biggest city Hamburg (prep your sightseeing persona too; you'll want to spend several days here). Stover Strand has spacious pitches overlooking the water and leisure facilities such as a playground. There's a well-stocked shop for your foodie bits and bobs, a snack bar and two restaurants with heated terraces and home-cooked meals including an a la carte menu, regional specialities and regular foodie events including barbecue buffets and dinners on the beach. The on-site bistro serves breakfasts in the morning and cakes and coffee in the afternoon. Swimming, watersports, fishing and cycling along the riverbanks are all popular picks nearby, as is pottering about the small towns and traditional villages of the region.

Local attractions

Over 20 varieties of fish live in the River Elbe for fisherfolk to land – eel, perch, pike, bream, gudgeon, silver bream, zander and burbot all have their home here. Buy a fishing permit on site if you fancy trying your angling luck; you can buy fishing kit too if you need it, and the staff will freeze your catch for you if needed (or you can fry it up fresh at one of the barbecue areas on the banks of the river). Hamburg (half an hour) is accessible by car and public transport. This lively place is crisscrossed by hundreds of canals with vibrant green areas, shops and restaurants. Here, you will surely want to swing by the Elbphilharmonie concert hall for a showing or browse the goods at the fish market. There is lively nightlife along the Reeperbahn too. Another fine spot for a day trip is the Hanseatic town of Lüneburg (25 minutes). It has a historic old town and splendid pedestrian areas for shopping.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch (riverside)

Liked: Late arrival was simple as it’s all done on registration numbers. The campsite was lovely our pitch being right by the lake. As we arrived late we went straight to the lovely restaurant. The service was great and the food fantastic and reasonably priced. Toilets immaculate.

Disliked: Shower separate to toilets and tokens had to be purchased to use it. The camper van pitches were quite tight but fine without awning.

Liked: Gate entry system when it works. Cycling around is excellent. Beach and swimming 50ft from pitch was great.

Disliked: 2 barriers on entry, choose wrong one and it's an embarrassing reverse. Make sure you have paid in full and they have correct reg number for vehicle or barriers will not function.
Just too big and regimental for me.
