  • Family site amid woodland, on the banks of the Ulmbach reservoir
  • Greifenstein 10 minutes’ drive; Koblenz one hour
  • Swimming lake; waterfront restaurant and beer garden; dogs welcome
A lakeside camping holiday with all (or, at least, most) mod cons – and plenty to keep the kids busy and entertained, too? If that sounds just the ticket, head to Campingplatz Ulmbachtalsperre, a well-equipped site in the middle of the lush Hessian Westerwald forests, about one hour’s drive north east of Koblenz. The main thing you need to know about the site, which spreads across 18 hectares, is that it sits on the banks of a reservoir created along the river Ulmbach. Cue long, lazy days spent relaxing on the lawn just by the lock, taking a dip when it gets too hot or paddleboarding up to the floating platform from where you can dive into the lake. The site’s watery attractions ought to be enough to make the happiness of the children, but should they need a little more, there are several play areas with swings, slides and ping-pong tables, not to mention heaps of space for a game of volleyball or football. And so that the grown-ups don’t feel left out, there’s a waterfront restaurant with a beer garden and plenty of picnic tables shaded by large umbrellas. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their human family in the beer garden (but do keep them on a leash); and although they’re not allowed in the lake, they can have a refreshing paddle in the nearby stream. Amenities on site include a well-maintained toilet block with facilities for disabled guests and a launderette.

WiFi a pagamento.

Liked: We recently stayed here and had a pleasant experience overall. The location is lovely—easy to find, peaceful, and well-maintained. The staff were friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome from the start. The facilities were spotless, with super clean bathrooms and powerful showers, which was a big plus. The site felt quiet, safe, and secure, making for a relaxing stay.

Disliked: However, there were a few downsides. Not being given the gate code meant we had to wait each time we wanted to enter, which was a little inconvenient. The showers required payment, which always feels like an unnecessary extra charge, and the free WiFi was limited to just 15 minutes a day, which wasn’t ideal.

Overall, we wouldn’t rush back, but if we were passing through the area again, we’d happily stay here. It looks like a great spot for summer with lots of events, so it might be worth revisiting in peak season.

Local attractions

If you head into Greifenstein, perhaps to sample one of the local restaurants, be sure to stop at the medieval hilltop castle, behind whose imposing stone walls are the Bell World museum, entirely devoted to bells, and a Baroque church with an intricately decorated ceiling. Then climb up to the tower for expansive views of the surrounding forests. Skulpturenpark – Siegfried Fietz (10 minutes) is home to artworks – crafted out of materials such as wood, stone and metal – that blend naturally with the surrounding woodland. A little further south is the Lahntal Outdoor Center, which runs canoe tours of the river. Koblenz is known for the vast Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which dominates the city from a wooded hill (you can get there by a cable car that crosses the Rhine). On the opposite bank of the river is Schloss Koblenz, an elegant 18th-century palace with formal gardens.
