  • Well-equipped luxury motorhome park in Habichtswald Nature Park
  • Kassel half an hour’s drive; Edersee Dam 35 minutes
  • Wellness area with saunas and an indoor pool; restaurant; cycle hire
Are you a bit of a hiker, or just looking for a peaceful spot to put your feet up in central Germany? Ferienanlage Erzeberg is a handy base for both, as well as for exploring the Hesse state. Its comfortable motorhome pitches are at an altitude of 350 metres, surrounded by the beech forests, pastures and patchwork agricultural landscape of the spectacular Habichtswald Nature Park. Park your motorhome in one of the gravel pitches (all with electric hook-up), then take a good look around you. The site is on the outskirts of Balhorn, which is a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk along a quiet road lined with arable fields; better yet, hire a bike once you’re on site and cycle to the village in about five minutes – and without the headache of where to park. There are lots of well-marked hiking trails in the area that will take you through pretty half-timbered villages and past interesting sights. For example, the long-distance Habichtswaldsteig (85 kilometres), which leads from the Edersee reservoir north to Zierenberg, passes through Bad Emstal (10 minutes) and Kassel (half an hour). And, this being a gently mountainous area, there are plenty of routes for mountain biking fans, too. Back on site after all that activity, reward yourself with a few hours in the wellness area, which is equipped with different types of saunas (at different temperatures, including a hard-core Finnish sauna that reaches 90°C) and showers. It also has a heated indoor pool should you fancy swimming a few energising laps. Otherwise, just chill on a lounger, taking in the landscape through the floor-to-ceiling windows. More views can be admired from the sun terrace of the restaurant, which serves dishes like schnitzels and flammkuchen.

Liked: Easy simple and clean toilets etc. site level.

Disliked: Moterhome site was on the perimeter of the site, had to walk through security gate to get to the rest of the facilities. There was an additional cost to use the showers.

Local attractions

Park at the foot of Burgruine Weidelsburg (15 minutes’ drive), and with an uphill hike of 15 minutes or so you'll reach the largest castle ruins in North Hesse. It's still possible to make out the shapes of the walls, towers and gates; it's a splendid setting for a picnic or indeed just a quick getaway from your pitch for an hour or two. Looking for a hike that’s longer than 15 minutes? Kellerwald-Edersee National Park (25 minutes) has plenty, from trails through copper beech forest trails to paths overlooking Edersee Reservoir and the park’s ravines. It’s a steep climb on foot to Bärenbergturm (25 minutes), a tower with views out over northern Hesse. For water views, try the trails around Edersee Dam (35 minutes) too. There’s plenty of action to be had in other forms if you're not much of a rambler. Kletterwald Kassel / Kletterpark (20 minutes) has treetop adventure courses and Badeparadies Eiswiese (an hour) is a waterpark with slides and a spa (just in case you fancy a little treatment while you’re there).
