Who would have thought that a recycled shipping container could be transformed into a ‘workshop of dreams’? But that’s exactly what the imaginative folks at L'Atelier des Rêves have achieved on the outskirts of the village of Salernes (five minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk), in the Var department of southern France.
This tiny house for two on the north-facing side of the Serre mountain comes fully equipped with all (or, at least, most) that you might need during your romantic break – from practical items like bed linen, towels and hairdryer; to comforting touches (coffee and a variety of teas) and entertaining diversions such as magazines, board games, a ping-pong table, and a TV with on-demand options.
However, you’ll have to step outside for the real pièce de résistance here: the decked terrace is where you might be able to enact your ‘king/queen of the world’ fantasies as you take in spectacular, uninterrupted views of forested slopes – from the swings, the hammock or the hot tub.
And don’t think that this outdoor area is a ‘good season only’ bonus. Summer sun loungers are replaced by Adirondack chairs in the cooler months, when the owners also supply warm blankets and a wood stove, so you can stay up late and do a spot of stargazing in toasty comfort.
If you manage to drag yourself away from the cocooning vibe of the lodge, woodland trails start at the foot of the property, and there is a golf course a 15-minute walk away.

Verdon Natural Regional Park (10 minutes’ drive) is known for its landscape of rocky massifs and rugged gorges. As you hike along its challenging trails, keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey hovering and gliding above. For a different vibe, the shores of Lake of Sainte-Croix (40 minutes) are dotted with beaches and watersports centres.
Nearby villages include Aups (15 minutes), a famed centre for truffle hunting; Cotignac (20 minutes), dominated by a rocky cliff carved with troglodyte caves; and medieval Tourtour (20 minutes), with its lively Wednesdays and Saturday markets.
Fancy a day on the Côte d’Azur? Port Fréjus (one hour) has palm-dotted sandy beaches and inviting waters, plus a pretty marina fringed with restaurants and gelaterias. Just to the east, Saint-Raphaël has a casino and the Musée Louis de Funès, which displays both personal items and film clips of the celebrated French comic actor.
