If you're something of a rafting aficionado, this is the spot to get splashingly stuck in. As it still is even if you're new to the art, as Camping Hôtel de Plein Air les Cariamas is near the famed rafting spot of the Rabioux Wave and areas where novices can get to grips with technique in the surrounding Durance river. Canyoning, climbing, wild swimming at Lac de Serre-Ponçon and, less headily, donkey rides into the mountains are all top picks around here too: les Cariamas is at the southern entrance of the Écrins National Park for days doing all these, and is about 20 minutes' hike from the active town of Châteauroux-les-Alpes. Even more hair-raisingly, tandem paraglide flights are 10 minutes' drive away or about 35 minutes by bus, at Embrun. After days out trying all those, retreat thankfully to recuperate on six peaceful hectares among lush mountain views, whether you seek to loll around the pool, cast off for fishing, or keep your muscles active playing pétanque or hiring a bike to pedal around the grounds. There's free wifi too, should you care to do nothing more than surf the net, and a play area to keep the kids occupied while you research your next kayaking moves. Camping Hôtel de Plein Air les Cariamas has a grocery shop, fresh produce and gas cylinder sales. Barbecues are allowed.

Liked: Nice location

Disliked: Worst campsite we've used, only stayed 1 instead of 2 nights. Showers filthy and not connected properly, wash basins hadn't been cleaned, leaves and cobwebs in basins. Didn't use facilities as they were too dirty.

Liked: A lovely chilled out camp site. Swimming pool is located so you can sit a look at the mountains around you. Every two pitches has a facilities block with everything you need. Simple food and drinks at the bar all reasonably priced. Driving away the next morning we all said we will return for a longer visit. Staff helpful.

Local attractions

This centrally placed site has easy access to heaps of old mountain attractions, such as Embrun Cathedral, 15 minutes' drive away, the 12th-century abbey at Boscodon (20 minutes) and the silver mines of Fournel, half an hour away. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Fortifications of Vauban is within 50 minutes' drive. Kayakers will find this a cracking spot to wield the paddle in, as it's close to the Rabioux Wave, one of the most famed freewater kayaking destinations in Europe. If this isn't your thing, you can set out from the Rabioux leisure centre for via ferrata climbs, canyoning and mountain biking: whichever you pick, pack a steady nerve and an adventurous spirit. One of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe, Lac de Serre-Ponçon, is 20 minutes away for more peaceful times: swim or fish here, hire a boat or kayak for a gentler watery time than that of Rabioux, or pedal/hike the handsome paths around the lake. To expend even less effort, donkey rides are available about 10 minutes' drive from here.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Extras

Please select an electric hook-up if you wish to hire a fridge.

General

Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
The grocery shop is open between 01/06 and 30/09.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.

Hired accommodation

Hired accommodation: €500.00 (£435.76) damage/cleanliness/bracelet deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure after inspection of your unit should no damage/losses be found.
Your unit must be left clean and tidy; a fine of €50.00 (£41.45) will be charged for unclean units upon departure.

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).
