If you’re after Atlantic beaches with reliable surfing waves and spectacular sunsets, plus a serene vibe, consider staying at Camping Les Payolles, on the Île d’Oléron, in the Pertuis d’Antioche strait that is also home to Île de Ré. Leave the car behind, and walk 15 minutes through a pine forest to reach the coast and Beach Chaucre, a vast sandy stretch where the kids can build sandcastles, look for wee marine beasties in rockpools or fly a kite. If the waves prove irresistible, you might want to make a pit stop at the surf school en route to the beach to book yourself in for an introductory lesson. It takes about five minutes to cycle to the beach – and bike hire is available directly on site. Once you’ve secured your wheels, you can cast your explorer’s net a little wider: the island features 160 kilometres of cycle paths. Head to the east coast to the Beach of La-Brée-les-Bains (15 minutes by bike) or check out the Phare de Chassiron lighthouse (25 minutes) at the north-westernmost point of the island. Owners Véronique and Laurent will be happy to suggest itineraries according to your interests. Back at the site after a long day riding a bike (or the Atlantic waves), you can soothe aching muscles in the small swimming pool with massage jets, while the kids jump on the trampoline or challenge each other at a game of ping pong. For your meals, a snack bell sells ice creams, waffles, chips and drinks, and it’s possible to rent a gas barbecue. In the mornings, the site can also arrange for bread and pastries to be delivered to your pitch. The nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away, on the D734, and there are a handful of restaurants in Domino village (five minutes).

Liked: Lovely quiet small site, the hosts Laurent & Véronique were very helpful it being our first experience in a motor home. There were only 2 motor home pitches on the site & we had complete privacy. Each of the pitches had their own toilet, shower & wash up area which was excellent. All the site was extremely well looked after clean & tidy. We would return again without hesitation.

Local attractions

Saint-Georges-d’Oléron (10 minutes’ drive) is home to the Port Miniature Ti’Bato, which hires out small child-friendly boats and pedal karts; and Parc Boum Badaboum, with several large, inflatable structures. Get up close and personal with nutrias and wallabies at Parc Myocastors (20 minutes), where you can also meet and feed alpacas and watch a performance by trained domestic rats (Ratatouille and his family). If you prefer winged animals, there are swans and peacocks at the nearby Pole-Nature Marais aux Oiseaux (20 minutes). If the sea’s too rough for a swim, there is a 25-metre pool at Aquatic Center Iléo (20 minutes). The kids can splash around in the fun pool with water slides while you get your laps – or work up a sweat in the hammam.
