Shaded by the tall maritime pines and holm oaks of the Forêt de Suzac, Ideal Camping has spacious pitches on the outskirts of the seaside resort of St-Georges-de-Didonne, in the Charente-Maritime department. What’s your pleasure? Sandy beaches, perhaps? Then you'll be pleased to hear that the long crescent of Plage St-Georges-de-Didonne is only 200 metres away. You can unfurl your towel and relax on the golden sand as soon as you arrive – or, if you feel active, walk (or cycle) to the lighthouse at the northern end of the beach, then continue on past the headland to another sandy beach at Royan. Whatever you do, it pays to stay at the beach until early evening, as there's often a spectacular sunset. There’s also plenty to do on site, starting with a waterpark with pools (including a paddling area), slides and a Jacuzzi. Kids can also let off some steam in the well-equipped playground, or challenge their mates at the ping-pong table or on the multisport field. During peak season, the site also runs a lively entertainment programme with such activities as boules competitions, live music events and themed soirées. Barbecues are allowed, and a mini market on site sells a wide range of foodstuffs (including buttery croissants and freshly baked baguettes for breakfast). Alternatively, the snack bar serves burgers, pizzas and pasta dishes, or you can explore the restaurants and cafés in the centre of St-Georges-de-Didonne (five minutes’ drive). The site has twelve well-equipped and well-maintained toilet blocks with hot water and select equipment adapted for people with reduced mobility. There's also a launderette.

Liked: Le calme le soir et le camping et très familiale. L'animateur très marrant et sympathique, les pizzas sont très bonnes au restaurant du camping.Les sanitaires sont régulièrement nettoyer.

Disliked: Le manque de professionnalisme des serveurs au restaurant on à eux notre apéro au milieu de nos pizzas et les enfants on pas eu leurs coca non plus on à du leurs dire qu'ils avaient oublié les apéros et les coca et les grenadines du menu enfant et arrivé à la fin de leurs repas et on à du les demander pour les avoirs. Ils ont fait une erreur sur la note et à la fin aucun geste commercial même pas mon café offert pour s'excuser de tout ces désagrément.

Liked: Big pitch.
Amazing pool with slides.
Very handy for the beach. Great cycling straight from the campsite along the front/beach promenade.
Kids loved cycling around the site.

Disliked: The rain (not much you can do about that though!!).
No toilet roll in loos, had to remember to take own/think ahead.
No map given in arrival but we did find alternative showers that were quieter than main block.
Noisier than other sites but not too bad.
Felt quite crammed in but maybe this is more usual for French campsites? Not really our cup of tea but that’s our personal view. Only stayed for 2 nights so I’m sure there’s more we could have explored with more time and better weather.

Liked: Lovely situation in a pine forest. Generous sized pitches. Ample clean toilet/shower facilities. Lovely friendly shop on the site with fresh bread baked all day. Very short walk to a lovely beach

Disliked: Internet (which I require for email as a self employed person) was decidedly shaky but I could overcome this by sitting on a bench near reception and answering all my mail before 8.30 by which time the blazing sun was making my screen unreadable- not really a complaint at all and you don't go to superb locations like this to surf the net.

Local attractions

With its coastal habitats, inland seas and mudflats, the Parc Naturel Marin de l’Estuaire de la Gironde (10 minutes’ walk) provides shelter to a large number of migratory birds, including ducks and geese. If you’re lucky, you might also be able to spot bottlenose and common dolphins, plus grey seals. Sitting on a small island in the middle of the Gironde estuary, the Cordouan Lighthouse can be accessed only by boat from either Royan (15 minutes’ drive) or Le Verdon-sur-Mer (50 minutes). Climb the 301 steps to the top of this elegant 17th-century beacon (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to take in far-reaching views of the coastline. Zoo La Palmyre (25 minutes) is home to hundreds of animals – from big cats to primates, and from crocodiles to birds like colourful flamingoes and macaws. There are shows featuring sea lions and bird displays, or you can feed zoo-supplied corn to the resident giraffes and zebras.

Booking terms and conditions

Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

Bookings are nominative and non-transferable.
