  • Friendly Charente-Maritime site surrounded by forest
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach at Royan
  • Heated pool, playground, ball games area and regular events
If you need help with anything while on holiday in Royan, the mighty friendly team at highly popular French seaside holiday spot Les Chèvrefeuilles in Charente-Maritime are always on hand to help your well-earned break run smoothly. Les Chèvrefeuilles is on two hectares of land surrounded by forest, a short 10-minute drive away from the beach at Royan. Among its many facilities – oui, all free – are a big heated outdoor pool (20m x 9m) with a paddling pool pour les petits, a sun terrace with deckchairs around the swimming pool, a playground with swings, a multisports field, a pétanque court and a giant ball game area: bring your own bats or borrow them from the helpful team. As the day draws to a close, you can wind down from all that activity around a barbecue (allowed at Les Chèvrefeuilles as long as you keep them lifted off the grass), and if you're in need of any supplies you can either head into town for fresh local produce from Royan's central covered market or about a kilometre down the road to pick up essentials at the nearest supermarket.

Local attractions

Royan is rightly prized in Charente-Maritime as a seaside resort with five stunning beaches and eye-catching architecture, particularly that of its 1958 church the Notre Dame. Have a look too at its marina (envy-inducing), the gardens under the cube of the Palais des Congrès, and the Central Market, again designed by architects in the 1950s to be as noticeable as poss. Royan is set at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, the biggest in western Europe and where the Dordogne and Garonne rivers meet. Take a guided boat tour among its marshes, meadows and cliffs, to spot critters such as herons and storks, and to visit (all) its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Blaye Citadel, Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc. Ferries run daily across the estuary from Royan to Le Verdon-sur-Mer. Venturing a bit further around Royan from Les Chèvrefeuilles, you could/should have a look at the Cordouan lighthouse, the oldest in France; Mornac sur Seudre, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France; the squat 11th-century Church of St Radegonde at Talmont-sur-Gironde, and the Forest of la Coubre, the giant wooded area near Royan. If you're here with kids, popular family picks around the region are the Luna Park theme park, and La Palmyre Zoo, in the forest of Les Mathes and home to around 1,600 mammals, reptiles and birds. In a dither about what to do first or how to get there? Ask at the Les Chèvrefeuilles reception for tips on how best to arrange your day.
