  • Quiet Vendée campsite 150 metres from a sandy Longeville-sur-Mer beach
  • Talmont-Saint-Hilaire 20 minutes’ drive, Puy du Fou about an hour
  • Regular entertainment, multisports area and a covered, heated aquapark
Found on the outskirts of the Vendée’s Longeville-sur-Mer, Camping Le Petit Rocher sits in peaceful woodland just 150 metres from an expanse of sandy beach – and if you should tire of swimming in the sea, you’ll have heaps to do back at base too. The site’s aquapark has indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and three waterslides for kids to whizz down into the paddling pool, while adults relax on the sun deck. A free kids’ club will keep the youngest guests (aged between four and 12 years of age) entertained in the Easter holidays and during July and August. From April to September, there are numerous free family activities available daily, from sports tournaments to aquagym sessions and regional excursions; by night you can also join in bingo, karaoke and dance evenings or enjoy magic shows. Other handy amenities include a licensed bar, a snack bar and takeaway, a multisports field, pétanque court, playground and bicycles for hire. Wifi can be accessed at the bar, and there’s a launderette so you can keep on top of the chores.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: I think this site would be good in the summer as it was close to the beach and the pitches would be a little drier.

Disliked: Very wet, waterlogged pitch (so wet the family next door to us got their campervan stuck). When we arrived it was very busy, which I think is due to check in only being for a 3 hour block. There was constant traffic around the site and our pitch was covered in croissant crumbs. We left after one night. No signage on any of the toilets to show where the drinking water was.

Local attractions

The beach is only 150 metres from Camping Le Petit Rocher, so that might be the first port of call once you've dumped your stuff. Hiking, biking, mini golf, horse riding, tree climbing, watersports and boat trips are all available nearby. If you do decide to make use of the car keys, two topping options are close by: forest and sand dune trails around Longeville-sur-Mer (five minutes’ drive), and Talmont-Saint-Hilaire (20 minutes) with its château, Aquarium de Vendée and vintage cars at the Musée de l’Automobile. A bit further away is the Parc Zoologique des Sables d’Olonnes (half an hour), home to around 40 endangered species, and even better, the superb and wonderfully kid-friendly Puy du Fou theme park is roughly an hour away – and well-worth the journey. If you fancy canoeing across France’s second-biggest marsh and wetland, the Parc Naturel Régional du Marais Poitevin is also about an hour by car.
