Spacious field for pitches

  • Rural campsite five minutes’ drive from Ballon-Saint-Mars, the Sarthe
  • Le Mans 35 minutes’ drive; Royal Abbey of Epau half an hour
  • Peaceful tree-shaded pitches in the owner's garden; near livestock
If you’re looking to get far, far away from everybody, you’ve in the right place. Pitch up at Les Pieds sur Terre, le Nez dans les Haies, la Tête dans les Étoiles, and chances are your only neighbours will be cows and ponies, for here you’re deep in the Sarthe countryside, where you can kick back, wake up to birdsong and doze off accompanied by the croaking of frogs. This site is not your typical tourist site, as it involves camping in the owner's garden. There’s little traffic hereabouts, but that’s not to say the site is isolated. An easy 10 minutes’ drive from the A28 motorway, it’s near the rural village of Ballon-Saint-Mars (five minutes), where you can pick up local produce in the market, fetch your daily baguette from the bakery or have a sundowner at the local bar. At your disposal at the campsite is a flat expanse of camping field, partially shaded by mature trees and lined with hedges. Take advantage of the communal picnic table on warm days, rustle up a barbecue (firewood is available on site) or huddle up around the campfire to watch the dark skies glitter with stars on clear nights. If the weather should turn against you, there’s a small communal chalet for shelter, and another larger room in the same block as the shower facilities. Now back to those birds. During your time on this sustainably run site – carefully managed by Ludovic with eco-diversity in mind – hopefully you’ll get to see and hear robins, magpies, blackbirds, woodpeckers, jays and nightingales.

Liked: Fabulous little campsite, tucked out the way, but easy to find & very peaceful, great for dark skies & star spotting as there is no light pollution.
Basic but clean facilities, showers with lovely hot water, toilets, kitchen sink, fridge freezer, & microwave.
Indoor seating & outdoor furniture.
Ludovic is a great host, very friendly & helpful.
We would definitely stay again if we were In the area

Le petit hêtre fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Rural location and very peaceful. Exceptional host who ensures everything ok and always available if any questions. Have stayed several times on the way down South as is an ideal stopover within easy distance of motorway but also would recommend for longer stop as lovely area and close to Le Mans.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Le petit hêtre fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Ludovic was a great host, he sent us welcome messages prior to arrival and on meeting us gave a detailed tour of the facilities. Yes, we were the only couple on site but he made us feel at home. The site itself is eco friendly and quirky with little touches like home grown walnuts and a couple of free beers in the fridge. There is the option of inside shower/ toilet or for the brave an outside compost toilet and shower. If you prefer the Hilton Hotel go and stay in the Hilton!
On speaking to Luovic(his English is very good)he has future plans for the facility building to be run 100% solar.

Disliked: My dog was not keen on the 2 cats!

Le petit hêtre fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: We had booked this campsite purely on the basis that we required an overnight stop-off, somewhere in the area of Le Mans, for our return journey from South West France up to Calais.

We were not really anticipating much, other than a pitch in a field, so what an absolute treat to arrive to a warm welcome from our host, Ludovic, who had made contact with us earlier in the day.

The site is so peaceful, set within beautiful countryside. The facilities are rustic, possibly even basic for some peoples needs, but everything is clean and in good working order. We were even treated to some tomatoes from Ludovic's garden, and were told to help ourselves to any herbs or blackberries growing around the site. We also bought some fresh eggs from our host.

We were so disappointed that our stay was only a short one. We will definitely stay at the campsite again, but for much longer! Thank you.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, Ludovic was a very kind host who went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Great value for money, access to a fire pit with seating around it. An inside space with fridge freezer (2 complimentary beers were put aside for us!😊) Shower, toilet and a place to sit if the weather turns bad. Also a well established herb garden to help yourself to. Recommend the outside shower.

Local attractions

There’s certainly plenty to do outdoors; you’ll need a licence to fish in the Orne Saônoise river (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also hire kayaks or canoes for a paddle downstream. Other alfresco pursuits include hiking, mountain biking and horse-riding trails, all on way-marked tracks close to the campsite. If you’re staying local, combine exercise with a potter around the verdant parkland at the Donjon de Ballon (five minutes), and explore the once-fortified medieval chateau itself if you’re visiting in summer. Another historic building to check out nearby is the peaceful Royal Abbey of Epau (half an hour), known for the beauty of its Cistercian architecture and stained-glass windows. And of course a visit to Le Mans (35 minutes) should be considered too. You might be lucky enough to hit town when the famed annual 24-hour car race is on (in June), but this is a historic place with plenty to enthral any time of year. You can see remains of the Gallo-Roman walls, stroll by half-timbered houses within the Old Town and get your fill of vintage sports cars in the interactive Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
