Grass pitches

  • Shaded grass pitches along a former arm of the Loire, western France
  • Zoo de La Boissière-du-Doré 15 minutes’ drive; Nantes 50 minutes
  • On-site fishing; pétanque court and playground; vineyard tours nearby
As its name announces, Camping de L’Orée des Boires (‘the edge of the Boires’) sits on the banks of the Boire de la Rompure and only a short walk from the Boire de la Nigaudière, in the Maine-et-Loire department of western France. Both ‘boires’ are former arms of the river Loire, which flows just a little further north. The site’s riverside location makes it a top destination for anglers, who can sit amid lush vegetation, spotting moorhens, as they wait for fish to bite. You can get a permit from the bakery in the village of Drain, about half a kilometre away. But it’s not all about rods, reels and other fishing equipment at this peaceful site. If you stay here, you’ll also have easy access to the Anjou vineyard route, which takes in vineyards, wine-producing villages and cellars that welcome visitors for tours and tastings. Active types keen to explore cycling routes and hiking trails head to the Panorama on the Loire scenic point (10 minutes’ drive, or 20 minutes by bike) or cross the Loire at the Pont de Mauves and visit the Sentier des coteaux et des coulées (20 minutes, or one hour by bike). In addition to well-defined shaded grass pitches, the site has a play area, a pétanque court and a café, plus a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests and a launderette. There’s a large supermarket a five-minute drive away, as well as a restaurant in Drain. Across the Loire, Ancenis-Saint-Géréon (10 minutes) has more dining and shopping options.

Local attractions

Leave France behind for a while and immerse yourself within the various exotic habitats at Zoo de La Boissière-du-Doré (15 minutes’ drive) – from the African plains, with lions, zebras and antelopes, to the Australian aviary, where you can see emus and lorikeets, alongside other creatures from Downunder, such as wallabies. Nantes (50 minutes) is known for Les Machines de l’Île, a steam-punkish amusement park with a giant robotic elephant and Jules Verne-inspired rides. Nantes also has a more serious side, with informative displays at the subterranean Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery. The Japanese garden on the Île de Versailles is also worth a visit, as is the moated 15th-century castle. Overlooking the river Maine in Angers (50 minutes), Château d’Angers is a medieval stone fortress housing the vast Apocalypse Tapestry. To see the latest developments in the world of weaving, head to the Musée Jean-Lurçat et de la tapisserie contemporaine; or check out the Museum of Natural Science for dinosaur fossils.
