Shaded pitches

  • Spacious, shaded pitches at a family site with lovely Pyrenees views
  • Lourdes and Animal Park of the Pyrenees within a 10-minute drive
  • Heated outdoor pool and large play area on site; dogs welcome
Fresh mountain air, gorgeous mountain scenery – and plenty of open space to enjoy both? If that sounds pretty much like your holiday wishlist, head to the Haute-Pyrénées and a stay at Camping La Châtaigneraie. Just on the edge of the village of Agos-Vidalos, this family-friendly site makes a lovely base for an outdoor break, with plenty of options nearby for hikes, rafting and other alfresco adventures, as well as a good cluster of facilities on site. With dogs welcome on site and shaded pitches that have space for barbecues, awnings, gazebos and the like, you’ll be able to get yourselves set up just how you like it for your break. When you’re not out exploring your scenic surroundings, you can still take in some spectacular mountain views from right here on site – just head to the outdoor pool, where sun loungers are on hand for those who’d like to relax, and a heated pool and waterslide cater for the more energetic sorts. Just next to the pool is the play area, with a trampoline and plenty of play kit, all on a shock-absorbing surface for safety. There’s no need to stress about practicalities, either – the site has a launderette, a wifi service, a washing-up area and bathrooms with accessible facilities and others designed for kids. Fresh bread and pastries are delivered to site every morning from the end of June to the end of August, and there’s a supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Ayzac-Ost.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic mountain views from the campsite. Grassy spacious pitch. Clean facilities. Helpful staff. Peaceful campsite. Excellent WiFi.

Disliked: Male toilets shut so the female shower/toilet block were unisex - I guess because low season.

Some favourite hiking spots nearby include Pont d’Espagne (45 minutes’ drive), Gaube Lake (55 minutes) and Cirque de Gavarnie (an hour). Don’t worry if your knees aren’t up to all this hiking – there are also some excellent cable cars around, such as the one that runs up to the summit of Pic du Midi (an hour).
