- Adults-only dome in the Haute-Garonne, with views of the Pyrenees
- Lac de la Ganguise 20 minutes’ drive; Carcassonne 55 minutes
- Bathtub; decked area with Jacuzzi and brazier; breakfast included
Those who have been thinking of surprising their partners with a romantic break would be advised to make a booking at Dôme Lauragais – fast. This large geodesic dome has an adults-only policy (the best start when you’re talking about a couples holiday) and a spectacular location with views of the Pyrenees mountain range.
And the enviable location is only the beginning. This spot in the Haute-Garonne department of south western France comes with a giant bed for comfortable slumbers; air conditioning and heating; a toilet area with a sink; and a decadent bathtub. Bubble bath, bathrobes and flip flops are provided, as are sheets, pillows and blankets.
Want more? Breakfast is included, and it’s a smorgasbord of delicious offerings, such as homemade pancakes, freshly baked bread, seasonal fruit and juices, and artisanal jams and yogurts. Coffee and tea are available as part of the courtesy tray in the dome, which also includes bottled water. The pampering has only just begun: evening meals (with Champagne) can be served in the dome, and you might dial the romance right up by requesting red roses and heart-shaped balloons.
A private terrace has a brazier for those who’d rather prepare their own meals (the nearest shop is in Saint-Michel-de-Lanès, a five-minute drive away or a 35-minute walk), and there’s also a hot tub, an umbrella and deckchairs where you can stretch out and look at the stars.
For an additional fee, the owners will also arrange a round-trip shuttle service between the dome and the station of Villefranche-de-Lauragais (15 minutes’ drive), or Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (40 minutes) if you’re flying in.

Local attractions
If you fancy a day by (or on) the water, there are beaches around Lac de la Ganguise (20 minutes’ drive). The lake is also a popular destination for watersports, especially sailing, and between March and December it’s possible to hire paddleboards, pedal boats and canoes. The surrounding woodland is laced with hiking and mountain-biking trails.
Toulouse (40 minutes) sits on the banks of the river Garonne. After visiting the medieval Basilique Saint-Sernin, with its distinctive bell tower, head to the Place du Capitole, a monumental square anchored by a Neoclassical building housing the town hall. On the outskirts of town, the Cité de l’Espace has futuristic displays about space discovery.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Carcassonne (55 minutes) is famed for its medieval towers and defensive walls. It’s possible to book boating tours along the Canal du Midi, which snakes through the town, linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean.
