  • Peaceful site surrounded by greenery, 20 minutes' drive from Limoges
  • Lake Saint Pardoux 10 minutes’ drive; Park Zoo Reynou 25 minutes
  • Near the A20; outdoor pool with paddling area and sun loungers; bar
The nature reserves of the Limousin region of central France are yours to explore from your base at Camping Les Roussilles, a family-friendly spot a 20-minute drive from Limoges, in the Haute Vienne department. From the site, you can reach both the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park (forests and moors) and the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin (hills, gorges and lakes) in about 45 minutes. And since three is the perfect number, you might want to add the Parc naturel régional de la Brenne (also 45 minutes) – and another landscape (watery marshes, this time) – to your exploration haul. If you don’t fancy driving that far, the intriguingly named Path of Legendary Stones, in Compreignac, is a 10-minute drive away. Les Roussilles itself occupies a tree-dotted field on the edge of the woods, which means you can choose a shaded or a sunny spot. Whatever you opt for, you should feel like royalty here: all the pitches measure at least 70 square metres. Facilities on site include an outdoor swimming pool with a paddling area for younger guests; in between laps and dips, stretch out on a sun lounger poolside or get closer to nature by unfurling a towel on the surrounding lawn. The on-site bar (open during the site's opening hours only) is a splendid place to gather for an apéro, or you can head to one of the eateries on the shore of the Étang de la Crouzille (five minutes, or a half-hour walk) or to Ambazac (10 minutes), where you can also stock up on everything you need for the barbecue.

Electric grass pitch

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nothing as unable to leave the pitch. Totally unsafe for wheelchair users.

Disliked: Requested a pitch close to disabled facilities at time of booking. But there's no facilities for disabled. Impossible to even get to the showers and toilets as the gradient is too steep on a badly laid crazy paving path for my electric wheelchair. At the bottom of the path there's around 8 concrete steps. Unable to shower at all, which was the only reason we booked the pitch. Restaurant and bar closed yet states would be open. No WiFi.

From the manager: Mrs and Mr arrived on 2 October. They stopped at the
restaurant, where I was standing and told them they could pick a pitch.
When checking in, told sir they could order food till 7pm.
Bar is open from 7pm.There was no mention of wifi, even though we have it.
Also we have an invaded shower/toilet.After 1 day sir met and no complaints
received. When the review was posted, Mr and Mrs were still at the campsite.
I met sir and he told me he knew nothing about the negative review.I asked him
correct the review and he promised me to do so.Just before they left, madam took a shower in our disabled shower/toulet. Probably sitting down,as that falicity is present.

Local attractions

If you’re into wild swimming, head to Lake Saint Pardoux (10 minutes’ drive), a splendid spot surrounded by forested hills and dotted with sheltered coves. A boating club on the south eastern shore rents out canoes, paddleboards and pedal boats, and there’s an inflatable adventure course, too, plus fishing areas. Take a stroll through the centre of Limoges (20 minutes), with its medieval half-timbered houses and narrow cobbled streets. The Église Saint-Michel-des-Lions is a 14th-century church with Gothic vaults and vibrant stained-glass windows, and the Musée national Adrien Dubouché exhibits the ceramics for which the city is famed. Snow leopards, red pandas and polar bears are among the residents at Park Zoo Reynou (25 minutes). Sign the kids up for a ‘meet a keeper’ experience, so they get to see some of the animals up close and learn about caring for them.
