Anyone in search of a marvellous Creuse break should certainly mull over the idea of a stay at Moulin des Forges. Why so? Well, for starters, have a closer look at the scenery: woodlands, streams and lakes (yes, lakes plural) make up the bulk of this four-acre spot, with a smattering of restored stone buildings thrown in for good measure. It wouldn't be fair to focus only on the backdrop, though, as owners Colin and Christina have pitched in to sort an array of on-site leisure facilities: there's a heated outdoor pool here, plus a fully equipped games room with wifi access, a snooker table, darts, a games console, DVDs and books. Un petit tour à bicyclette could also be in the pipeline, with two-wheelers available to hire on site for those who haven't brought their own along. Paddleboards are also available for an extra charge if you want to admire the site's watery spots from every conceivable angle. Strong all-round facilities are another thing that'll keep you sweet at Moulin des Forges: there's a shared kitchen with plenty of space for food prep, plus a washing machine, toilets and hot showers. Barbecues are allowed here; with a bit of clever timing you can combine self-grilled bites with fresh bread straight from a local boulangerie that delivers on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The village of Moutier-Malcard is about two kilometres away and has a post office and bar. Aigurande (15 minutes' drive) is home to the closest large supermarket.

Liked: An ideal spot for people who enjoy peace and tranquility, off the beaten track in rural France. We received a warm, friendly welcome from Colin, who showed us around the facilities including two clean shower rooms, kitchen area and provisions store . Lots of birdlife in a pretty, treed valley next to a stream. Lovely swimming pool. Our boy enjoyed the games room and rowing on the lake. We had a relaxing stop and a restful night, enjoying the place to ourselves.

Liked: Colin was friendly and amazingly helpful - he really made us feel welcome when we arrived and spoke to us about the available pitches, telling us about when they are in sim, shade, etc.

Lovely quiet location and the pool was excellent.

The bathroom and shower facilities were spacious and really clean.

Liked: Everything, Colin and Christina are fantastic hosts, booked 4 nights stayed for 6 , superb camping area , swimming pool, games room with snooker table, tv, and dart board, full use of a well equipped kitchen and fridge freezer, excellent value, also a free fishing lake, tackle provided if you don’t have your own, cannot recommend enough, if you’re in this part of France then a visit to this site is a must, will definitely go there again.

Liked: We liked the location, our hosts and the facilities. It was such a stunning place to stay. The showers were great, lots of hot water. Toilets with seats! If you've travelled in France much you'll understand that comment. Nice quiet location in beautiful countryside. Our hosts were very friendly, even sourcing us some eggs when we didn't have any. We were only here one night as we stopped en route to somewhere else, but would have happily stayed for longer. Would have loved to have time to try the pool which looked amazing.

Local attractions

What, you may be wondering, is the choice of châteaux like in this rural part of France? Well, here you have quite a bit to keep history boffins busy: Sarzay (30 minutes' drive) has a rather fine 14th-century specimen that's worth exploring, while Meillant (an hour and 10 minutes) has an impressively regal estate still inhabited by a marquis. For sporting days out, meanwhile, you could trot down to the local riding school (five minutes' walk), putt a while at Hôtel Les Dryades golf course (10 minutes' drive) or try your hand at waterskiing at Sensas'park (10 minutes). This is a watery part of the world, and there are several other lakes around where you can swim or mess about in boats. Lac d'Éguzon (35 minutes) is good for both of these; if you fancy a lake on a somewhat grander scale, there's also Lac de Vassivière (an hour and 20 minutes). And then there's Guéret (30 minutes), where a mix of cinemas, mediatheques, museums, open-air labyrinths and well-attended weekly markets should be enough to pique your curiosity for a good few hours.

Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Extras

Facilities/activities including washing machine are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Public areas are non-smoking.
Quiet hours must be respected between 12 a.m. and 7 a.m..
