Seeking a sojourn at a park that's shaded, laidback and quiet, and has a magnificent mountain backdrop, a little river flowing nearby and easy access to photogenic towns and villages, farmers' markets and eateries? Stop right there, because this might just be the one. First off, Camping Le Rotja is right in the middle of the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of southern France, which means you'll be surrounded by forested foothills and kilometres upon kilometres of peaceful peaks, including that of the impressive Canigou mountain. Kids have more than enough available on site to fill their days with too; leisure facilities include an outdoor pool with a tiny 40cm-deep toddlers' pool beside it for safe paddles and water games, as well as a playground with a climbing frame, swings, a sandbox and two ping pong tables. Staff also organise sports activities for older kids, so they'll always have something to keep them occupied while you're off relaxing. Barbecues aren't a thing here, but the site's little licensed restaurant has a good and varied menu if ever you feel like having a chef cook a nice local dish for you; otherwise, you can relax there with a glass of wine or an ice cream, or head into Villefranche-de-Conflent – a handy four-kilometre jaunt away – to check out its eateries and weekly farmers' market.

Liked: Large shaded pitches, clean toilets and bathrooms and my husband loved the disabled shower room which was perfect for his needs! The host was fabulous and did his best to help us have a lovely stay!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Liked: We stayed for 4 nights and absolutely loved this site. The location is fantastic so much to do in the area, and it’s a beautiful part of the world. The pitches were level and spacious. The facilities were very clean and tidy - toilets, showers and washing up area. Nice little pool to cool off in and a play area with swings, trampoline and a sandpit for the children. The owners were lovely and spoke good English. There is a bar and restaurant, we didn’t use them but they seemed very popular. I liked the chilled out vibe of the site and it felt very safe. Point to note is the electric hook ups are the traditional / old French 2 pin so an adaptor is needed, we had one with us, a couple on the pitch next to us didn’t but the owners had one they borrowed to hook their camper van up with

Disliked: Pool area could have done with a little updating

From the manager: Thank you so much for your nice opinion. We do our best. With the swimmingpool you are probleby right. We were hoping to use the small pool for the smallest children again this year. But with the waterrestrictions we are not able to use that small pool again this year, like last year. We have to keep the rules from the governement and save much water. 30%!! We can not do that with showers. We had the last years in this valley less rain than they have in Tjaad and Eritrea, So probleby we have to take a way the small pool, and than it looks much better, I am so sorry, but that´s how it is right now. But we are so happy that we still have the normal pool....

From the manager: Bedankt voor de fijne beoordeling, maar over de toilet brillen liegt u nu dat is niet prettig . Of in de war met een andere Camping misschien. Al onze toiletten hebben wc brillen.

nos gustó mucho el espacio y todo el campamento en general. Por la época supongo que no había mucha gente, asi que disfrutamos mucho el espacio, el area de juegos y las estrellas por la noche. Muy cerca hay una iglesia a la que escuchas el repique de campanas. Volvería sin duda han sido unos dias muy buenos. La única pega por decir algo, supongo que igual por la fecha, es que no estaba habilitada la piscina o el rest. Pero igual disfrutamos mucho!!

Local attractions

As you're right in the middle of the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park, there are tons of hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails that begin right at the site and take you up into the surrounding foothills. If you're after something a little more taxing to fill your days in the Pyrenees with, then rafting, canyoning and hydrospeeding are all available nearby. For those who enjoy a spot of history, the former military settlement of Villefranche-de-Conflent, four kilometres away, has a particularly photogenic medieval quarter. From here you can take a walk up to Fort Liberia, which presides over the town from a hillside above, and provides some pretty stunning views over the three roads that lead into Villefranche and the countryside that surrounds the town. For those in need of a bit of pampering, the thermal spas at Vernet-les-Bains' Belle Époque spa district are a proper treat. Apart from all the lush spa treatments on offer around here, there's plenty of history to admire too; overlooked by the castle tower and the Church of St Saturnin, the spa area is centred around a peaceful park and is filled with pretty narrow cobbled streets, including a circuit that's handily punctuated by tourist info plaques to help you get to grips with the village's watery history.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

Dogs

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
