- Family site in central Lozère, 15 minutes' drive from Mende
- In Barjac village; a 50-minute drive to Gorges du Tarn or Aven Armand
- On the edge of the river Lot and access to fishing; seasonal pool
Heads up, folk looking for a central Lozère location… Camping Le Clos des Peupliers could be the place for you. Set on the edge of the river Lot, it's surrounded by the gorgeous landscapes of the Lot valley and only 15 minutes' drive away from the shops in Mende too. In the local area, everyone can get stuck into activities such as hiking, cycling, trout fishing or motorcycling.
The family-friendly site stretches out over more than seven acres of green land on the edge of the village of Barjac, and it has access to the Lot river for some excellent category 1 trout fishing. Permits are available for visitors, and there’s also the option of having a lesson with a fishing guide if you’d like to brush up your skills or pick up some tips about the local area.
Despite this rural-looking setting, this site is exceptionally easy to get to – it’s just off the N88 and about a 10-minute walk from the local railway station. That means it should be nice and straightforward to get out and about, whether you’re heading off to hike or bike in the Cévennes National Park, meet animals at the area’s wildlife parks or check out natural wonders like the Gorges du Tarn and its nearby caves. Parc naturel régional des Grands Causses is within half an hour's drive of the site, and the Aubrac plateau is again within a short drive.
So, plenty to do in the surrounding area… and in fact there’s plenty to do on site as well. The heated swimming pool is open from June to August, and other leisure options include a games room (with table football, billiards and pinball), a playground, table tennis and pétanque. You can join in with pétanque tournaments (on Tuesdays) and weekly Thursday-evening entertainment in summer, and there’s a collection of board games and books to borrow if you’d prefer a bit of quiet time.

Getting out to explore on foot or by bike might take you to local paths or over into the Cévennes National Park (10 minutes’ drive). There’s a scenic golf course at Golf de la Pommeraie (five minutes), and a couple of great via ferrata climbing routes at Moïse (15 minutes) and Mende (half an hour). Parc Lozère Découverte (20 minutes) is a good choice for adventurous kids, who can get up into the trees or meet life-sized dinosaur statues.
For real-life animals, take yourselves off to see wolves at Les Loups du Gévaudan (half an hour) or the resident birds at House of the Vultures (an hour).
One of the unmissable sights around here is the Gorges du Tarn (50 minutes), where you can canoe or kayak between the soaring cliffs. More intrepid types can try out canyoning nearby too, or you can get underground at Aven Armand (50 minutes), riding a funicular down to see the illuminated limestone features.
