Whether you’re venturing into Provence or staying around awhile to familiarise yourselves with the stunning landscapes of The Camargue, you’re pretty much guaranteed a quiet stay at Camping La Chicanette. Tucked into a patch of leafy green in the Gard region’s medieval town of Saint-Gilles, this low-key family site is also a handy springboard to Avignon (50 minutes’ drive) and Nîmes (35 minutes). The owners pride themselves on the relaxed and friendly vibe of the place, which packs in a swimming pool and smaller paddling pool for non-swimmers on a spacious sun terrace, a boulodrome and ping-pong tables for fiercely fought family competitions, and a terrace shaded by parasols outside the laid-back snack bar. Every Friday there’s a dance on site, as well as themed suppers during the week (think paella or mussels and chips), and at various times local artisans display their wares on site too. Pitches and accommodation units are shaded from the summer heat by a canopy of trees, and if you’ve left anything vital behind at home (hair dryers or baby-changing mats, for example), chances are you can source replacements from the jovial gang at reception. They can also rent out table-top fridges, bed-linen and towels (less for you to pack) and stuff like adaptors. Looking for suggestions of where to go you’re out and about? Liked: Clean, friendly, good shower/toilet facilities. Excellent proximity to the small town and all its amenities.

Disliked: Mosquitos (not the campsites fault, of course).
Also, bring a hammer. The ground was very hard and we struggled to push the pegs in.

Liked: The welcome personalised communication prior to stay. Equally matched when we arrived. The campsite was clean and tidy with good sized, private pitches. Showers were hot which has not always been the case on our travels. Saint-Gilles was lovely to wander around, buy bread and have coffee, and the Sunday market was excellent. We were able to walk to the nearby supermarkets.

Liked: Everything! Located in a town, lovely swimming pool area and bar. There were a lot of cyclists using this site and there’s plenty of leisure cycling plus all the food shops and bars within 5 minutes. Excellent facilities too

Disliked: Slightly tight access. We got stuck on a minor road in as someone had double parked but not the site’s fault

Large, shaded pitch with electric hook-up. Great site which is actually in the village, with shops, bars, & restaurants just a short walk away. Nice clean facilities, and lovely pool. Great base to explore the area.

Disliked: Shaded pitch = Mosquitoes after dark. But that nature, not the fault of this great site.

Liked: No problem accessing the site in our motorhome and trailer. Lovely welcome and really great relaxed atmosphere. Staff very helpful.
Large pitches with hedges and trees for privacy, clean showers toilets and facities
Lovely big pool and paddling pool.. Plenty of seating.
2 mins walk away from town with great bars, resturants and pattiseries. (no noise at night though over the 8 nights we were here)
Nimes and Arles close by. Nimes Les Halles market on sunday was amazing!!Fantastic fresh produce. I have eaten my weight in cheese!!
Bird park was also very interesting and lovely to see flamingoes.

On a day out in The Camargue, watch out for the famed white horses, black bulls and salmon-pink flamingos in wetland meadows, pick up souvenirs from craft shops in the spectacular walled town of Aigues-Mortes (35 minutes’ drive) and wind up at a beachside restaurant in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (half an hour) with a plate of seafood in front of you. Holidaying with family? Make for the lively seaside resort of Le Grau-du-Roi (40 minutes) to chill on its sandy beaches backed by cafés, or have a go at fast-paced water sports along the coast. When the sun cools, spend an hour or two on the rollercoasters and Ferris wheel at Amigoland (40 minutes). For a healthy dose of culture, turn northwards to tour the ancient Roman remains and Vincent Van Gogh Foundation in Arles (20 minutes), or admire the Roman amphitheatre and elegant Jardins de la Fontaine in Nîmes (35 minutes). Booking terms and conditions

Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Changes cannot be made once you have booked.

Dogs

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

Hired accommodation

Hired accommodation: €200.00 (£170.80) damage/cleanliness/bracelet deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure after inspection of your unit should no damage/losses be found.
Your unit must be left clean and tidy; a fine of €50.00 (£42.70) will be charged for unclean units upon departure.

Occupancy

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.
No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Pitches

A cable measuring at least 15 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.
Pitches: a €20.00 (£17.08) deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure when returning the gate badge/barrier pass/toilet keys.
Units should not be left unoccupied unless previously agreed with the management. Please speak to reception when the need arises, a fee may be charged for unsupervised units.
You must follow the management directives when pitching your tent/unit and related equipment.

Pool

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.
Some facilities require the wearing of swim caps.
Swimsuits are obligatory and swimming shorts or Bermuda shorts are not permitted.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 31/10 (subject to weather conditions).

Reception

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
Reception is open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. between 30/03 - 05/07 and 01/09 - 31/10.
