Had the place to ourselves early december 2024

On the outskirts of the spa resort of Rennes-les-Bains, family-friendly Camping La Bernède sits in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the Aude department of south-western France. A peaceful vibe reigns at this elevated site, which sits at 310 metres above sea level. But there's also plenty of action to be had in the vicinity (including some pretty extreme action if that's your style), starting with climbing at the Pic du Bugarach (25 minutes’ drive), in the Corbières Massif, and whitewater rafting at Gorges de la Pierre-Lys (35 minutes). Hiking trails lace the surrounding forested mountains, and site owner Christelle will be happy to suggest the one that’s just right for your abilities. If you’d rather do very little (it’s supposed to be a holiday, after all), that's fine – you can relax by the side of the outdoor pool with a cocktail, play a board game (available from reception) with the kids (when they're not hanging out with new pals in the play area…) or take a gentle stroll with your dog along the banks of the La Sals river. It’s a leisurely 10-minute walk to the centre of the village, where you can stock up on essentials at the store or stop for pizza in the tree-shaded square. Not in the mood for pizza? No problem – the site's restaurant (which operates during the summer months) serves traditional dishes and regional wines, as well as selling freshly baked baguettes and breakfast pastries. Other amenities on site include a toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, showers and a launderette.

Disliked: Completamente al buio di sera e di notte. Fondo fangoso dove il camper rischia di affondare: siamo riusciti a salire nella piazzola a noi assegnata sul fianco della piccola montagna solo dopo “avere preso la rincorsa“ come suggerito dalla persona che ci ha accolto. Servizi non riscaldati e con pulizia al minimo necessario.

From the manager: Non Il n'est pas permis d'arriver tard le soir, vous êtes arrivés a 20h30 sans prévenir, nous vous avons accueilli, nous avons fait le tour du camping pour choisir une place avec vous.
La place choisi n'était pas boueux. Certes en hauteur mais sans difficultés pour y accéder, puisque ce sont nos emplacements dédiés aux camping-car.
Note très sévère, nos installations sont de bonne qualité et propres.
19€ la nuit avec électricité, vidange et remplissage de l'eau c'est correct, surtout quand on part sans payer la taxe de séjour et que l'on ne rend pas la lampe troche qui vous avez été prêté.

Liked: Great place to stop and enjoy nature. Family run site, lots of locals around too. The people are very friendly and we felt very welcome in the bar even though one of us has no french and the other has high school french from 20 years ago! The facilities are basic but the showers were warm and everything was very clean. We really enjoyed the village of Rennes Les Bains, there are beautiful walks and we enjoyed getting into the hot springs.

Disliked: That we didn't stay longer!

Liked: Loved this place. Very friendly & helpful owners. We were well out of season so the place was pretty deserted , showers were hot and clean as were the toilets. Great fun bathing in the hot springs locally & my Wife enjoyed some fantastic cycling in the surrounding countryside . Superb dark skies and a very peaceful stay. Probably buzzing in the summer when the pool and all the facilities are open. We'd definitely return.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Liked: Very good walks and outstanding scenery!! Felt very tropical in the mountains and site was clean

Disliked: Reception closed earlier than stated on pitch up so my wife had to find staff at the restaurant to let us in. Wouldn’t put me of staying there though, just be mindful of this.

Liked: Friendly welcome, clean facilities, small groups of pitches, quiet and secluded in September. Just 10 minutes along the road is a great vulture observation centre with free telescope. Watch them take to the thermals at about 10am each morning.

Local attractions

Created by the Agly river, the Gorges de Galamus (40 minutes’ drive) is a dramatic canyon with steep limestone sides. Find your way to the car park with a viewing deck (keeping your eyes peeled for golden eagles flying overhead), then continue on to the 14th-century Ermitage Saint-Antoine de Galamus, carved out of the rock. Here you'll be in the heart of the so-called Cathar Country, which in the Middle Ages was home to followers of a religious sect. They built abbeys and castles, including the fortresses at Puivert (40 minutes), Peyrepertuse (an hour) and Quéribus (an hour). If you want to learn more about Catharism, Puivert’s Musée du Quercorb is a great place to start. The town of Carcassonne (an hour), between the Aude and the Canal du Midi, is renowned for its medieval fortifications, punctuated by dozens of towers. The Cathédrale Saint-Michel, also resembling a fortress from the outside, has a Gothic interior, and there are collections of decorative objects at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.
Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
The bar is open between 01/07 and 31/08.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.
The restaurant is open between 01/07 and 31/08.
The site is not liable for any refund in the event of force majeure.

Hired accommodation

Hired accommodation: a €200.00 (£166.89) damage/cleanliness/bracelet deposit is required within 0 days of arrival and will be refunded within 5 day(s) of departure after inspection of your unit, should no damage/losses be found.
No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
Your unit must be left clean and tidy; a fine of €60.00 (£50.07) will be charged for unclean units upon departure.

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).
