  • Family park half an hour's walk from Saint-Valery-en-Caux beach
  • Half an hour's drive from Fécamp and 40 minutes from Dieppe
  • Playground, library and ping pong on site
What an excellent spot for days on the sand and exploring up and down the Normandy coast: Camping Etennemare is half an hour's stroll from the beach in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, a seventh-century town in Upper Normandy's Seine-Maritime department. The town's many restaurants, bars and half-timbered buildings are all niftily within walking distance too. The friendly owners here haven't simply relied on the location, though – not at all. They've added extra opportunities for splashing about in the form of a swimming pool (open during high season only) with a waterslide and a roof for times when the weather's not so great. If you're not plunging into the water or hurtling down its chute at any point, you might prefer to bask with a book borrowed from the library while the kids hurtle around the playground…? Entertainment is organised on Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, and the site also has ping pong tables and a pétanque court for those who fancy challenging a family member to a friendly match or two. Bread and pastries can be ordered on site; perhaps you might fancy picking up your baguettes and croissants before taking the short stroll to the town beach or packing everybody into the car to drive half an hour to Fécamp for dramatic cliff views, another splendid beach and lots of watersports activities…

What customers say

This is a well-kept, clean and quiet site with spacious pitches and a great pool. Staff are friendly and helpful. However, several reviews mention poor toilet facilities, with a lack of seats, toilet paper, and soap. The restaurant was only open on weekends for some guests. The location is a walk uphill from a town described as a bit drab.

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Location was good, nice to be able to walk into the marina/beach. Kids enjoyed the pool areas and slide.

Disliked Pitch sizes very hit and miss and not as advertised- ours was 7x8meters, not the 15x10 as expected. Paid extra for the 'comfort' pitch, but this was definitely not as advertised. We could barely fit our tent and car on! Asked if we could move (twice) a flat no! Asked if we could swap with the vacant pitch next to us to make it easier to get our car in and out- again, a rude no!!

You can only get WiFi sat outside the main building, not a major issue for us- but good to note!

Water taps are few and far between (depending I suppose where you pitch). My husband went to fill up bottles and was shouted at by the person pitched by it and told he couldnt use it and should go to the toilet block instead. He went to report to the staff (as others were being treated this way too). The staff confirmed it was communal- but at no point came to support and tell them this! They shouted at us (and the kids) every time until they left!!!

Toilet facilities were often very poor (actually disgusting!!) with a 5 and 8 year old, we found it so difficult when one of them needed to go to the toilet (it really was that bad!!!)

The showers advertised look pretty new and were great, but don't be fooled to think the toilets/sink areas are to this standard (probably why these aren't photographed in the advertisement!). A run down 70s leisure centre comes to mind!!! Concrete building with Graffiti all over the back door- not a great first impression! No toilet seats (as expected in France) but made worse by grim, dirty floors and everything just looks so dirty. People were disposing dirty nappies in the open bins, leaving them in a real state! Felt sorry for the one cleaner we would see in the morning! (Even if she was pretty rude- I could forgive her given what she had to deal with each day!)

This is a Noisy, crowded site. 'Quiet times' are not adhered to at all! No one to regulate or enforce. There were a few large groups of locals (one of which were pitched Infront of us) they had 4 or 5 cars parked all over the two pitches making it difficult for those of us pitched near to get to/from our pitches. When addressed with the staff, they woman just said she knew and shrugged her shoulders!

Read complaints on here with responses from the site to say these things should be addressed on site- we are proof that even when you do this, no action is taken to resolve them!

We were quite relieved to leave!

Servizi ampi e ben puliti.

Piscina sufficiente.

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Lovely quiet site with helpful staff and good food from restaurant. Pool area was lovely and the pitches were good sizes.

Disliked Cleanliness of the toilet block. No toilet seats, lack of toilet paper and no soap to wash your hands. Also, no lids on sanitary bins which you could smell in the toilet block as they weren't emptied frequently enough.

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Large pitches on a busy and diverse site. Washroom facilities were good. Needed a French adapter for power.

Disliked In a residential area up hill from the town/sea front, which itself was a bit drab and disappointing.

Local attractions

Camping Etennemare is in the small fishing town of Saint-Valery-en-Caux on the Alabaster Coast, between Dieppe (40 minutes' drive) and Fécamp (half an hour), all of which should suggest lots of opportunities for outdoor play. Saint-Valery-en-Caux dates back to the seventh century and has a beach that's sandy at low tide, edged by cliffs that overlook the Channel. Another pebbly beach as well as a 15th-century castle are in Dieppe, the port town at which you must sample scallops. The famed smoked herring dishes of these parts hail from Fécamp, another fishing port where catches have been landed for over a thousand years. Normandy's capital Rouen (55 minutes) is known for many a thing, such as the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen with its scenic Butter Tower, the city's castle, many museums including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen with works by Monet, and the Jardin des Plantes de Rouen botanical gardens. For outdoorsy pursuits nearby, hire a kayak at the nearby watersports centre (10 minutes), play golf or tennis or have a spot of fishing or horse riding.
