- Finnish kotas on a waterfront pontoon in an Ardennes valley
- A 20-minute drive from Charleville-Mézières; half an hour from Belgium
- Communal barbecue; wellness area with a sauna
The lodges at Kotas Esprit Nordique are a little bit different in a few ways. Firstly, these are typical Finnish kotas with a pointed roof and round base. Secondly, rather than being planted on the ground as you might expect, they sit on a lovely private pontoon over a pond. Thirdly, you’re not in Finland at all. The kotas are in a gorgeously green valley in the French Ardennes just half an hour’s drive away from the border with Belgium and 20 minutes from the ‘puppet capital’ Charleville-Mézières.
This part of France has splendid sloping countryside, forests and rocky ridges, making it a real treat for hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor sports. To get started, there’s a greenway just five kilometres away from the kotas, and the curved trails of the river Meuse are around 20 minutes’ drive away.
Fully furnished and facing south, the kotas are right on the water’s edge, making a welcome respite after a day in the outdoors. The grounds are on the banks of a river and are home to a few extra residents in the form of Highland cows Paquerette and Marguerite (often well-liked by kids). There is also a pellet stove in each kota for extra warmth when needed.
Spare hours at Kotas Esprit Nordique can be spent at the communal barbecue (‘kotagrill’) prepping and eating meals; the nearest grocery shops are around a 15-minute drive away, as Balaives-et-Butz, 20 minutes’ walk away, has little aside from pretty views. There is also a wellness area on the grounds with a sauna (bookable for an additional fee) should you really want to get some rest and relaxation.

Local attractions
With so many excellent spots around the Ardennes, where should you set your aim? Charleville-Mézières (20 minutes' drive) is a natural first choice, given its famed Place Ducale has been hosting a puppet festival for more than 50 years. Strolling past buildings of Italian baroque style, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the patisseries with sugar tart, a local speciality.
Sedan (half an hour’s drive) has what’s thought to be one of Europe’s biggest fortresses. Along the river Meuse, wandering through Sedan’s shops and restaurants is a lovely activity in itself. In Reims (55 minutes), pick up speed to fit in a glass of Champagne in one of the Champagne houses or wander through the grand cathedral.
There are plenty more fine spots within driving distance of the kotas, of course. Mouzon (40 minutes), near the border, has medieval streets with a 12th-century tower, an abbey and the Wool Felt Museum. Rocroi (half an hour), too, is interesting to look at, laid out in the shape of a pentagon with two city gates, a town hall and a village pump.
