  • Family campsite in woodland five minutes’ drive from Scaër in Brittany
  • Concarneau half an hour’s drive; Quimper and Breton beaches 35 minutes
  • Heated pool and Jacuzzi; takeaway breakfast; snack bar with pizza oven
Resounding to the sound of birdsong, leafy Camping Kerisole stands in around 35 acres of woodland, and is the gateway to active holidays exploring historic Finistère and Brittany on foot or by bike. A location on the Cycle Route and near the GR34 hiking route – what else can you ask for? A heated swimming pool on site, perhaps? Maybe takeaway breakfasts (with organic coffee, no less), and steak frites or pizzas in the evening? A snack bar selling ice creams and desserts to keep the kids smiling all day? Jacuzzi and sauna for you when you need some downtime? Luckily for you, Camping Kerisole has all of these… and plenty more besides. As far as practicalities go, the site is pretty handy. Families can look forward to well-maintained showers and baby baths, plus washing machines and dryers to keep on top of the housework. If you need help with anything at all, ask at reception, where there’s also a shop for topping on essentials and buying goodies to grill on the communal barbecue. Anything else you need, you’ll find in the rural Breton town of Scaër (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Is it to be towns, the beach or countryside cycle rides? At Camping Kerisole, you can do all three. Step back in time on a tour of lovely Quimper (35 minutes’ drive), where half-timbered houses sit under the shadow of medieval Saint-Corentin Cathedral, its spiky spires bristling with gargoyles. Take a stroll along the Odet River to browse pottery shops laden with brightly painted earthenware bowls and plates, and see fine Impressionist paintings of Brittany landscapes in the Musée des Beaux-Arts. For family days on the beach, head for Plage des Sables Blancs (half an hour), where there’s entertainment for the kids and lifeguards in summer, or take a picnic and laze on the sand at Plage de Kerléven (35 minutes), which also has facilities for surfing and paddleboarding. Rather do your exploring by bike? Running from Roscoff to the coast, Cycle Route Number 7 passes right next to the campsite and intersects with the Sentier des Douaniers GR34 walking route at Concarneau (half an hour) for hikes along the spectacular Brittany coastline.

Estivale 2 bedroom microlodge

Liked We stayed at Camping Kerisole for one night having booked by chance at very short notice to avoid a night under canvas elsewhere during Tempête Patricia.

We were in a Caravane Estivale, which are are described: “simple and clean”. But are also warm, comfortable and - crucially - able to withstand 90km/h wind and heavy rain.

Most communal facilities (everything required for camping) are also simple and clean. The swimming pool however is an absolute luxury: beautiful, warm and sheltered. The kids loved it.

The neighbouring arboretum is nice to explore. There are dozens of short, medium and long distance walking and mountain bike tracks nearby, with plenty of information available at reception.

Andy and Nathalie are friendly and welcoming. The food (and cider) available in the evenings is excellent.
