Un, deux, trois… with 20 free activities to choose from including canoeing and mountain biking in the summer months, you could make it your mission to get through them all on a trip to Camping Val de Landrouët. This lush spot in Brittany also has a swimming pool free for guests staying seven days or more – which is heated for submerges on colder days and supervised by lifeguards so the kids can splash down the slide safely. And if other watery adventures are wanted? Visitors can kayak on the lake at this 15-hectare site or trawl for carp, roach, pike, trout and black bass in the ponds. For energetic times, balls could be knocked about on the miniature golf course and serves honed on the indoor and outdoor tennis courts. If the idea of mastering medieval sports strikes a chord too, archery and fencing are organised at the site. The evening’s no less amusing here either: free entertainment is put on six evenings a week (in the summertime), with concerts, bingo, barbecues and film showings to pick from as well as discos for dancers and karaoke for crooners. Anytime of year, you can head off on hiking trails straight from the site towards the old railway track in the local village, foraging for chestnuts and apples in the trees on the way or keep to the park and take up the paddles at the ping pong tables. The playground’s open all season long and the kids’ club runs in the summer months if you’re seeking somewhere to keep them away from the barbecue while you grill... The site also has a bar-restaurant and the centre of Merdrignac is 15 minutes’ walk away for restaurants, while a supermarket is closer at five minutes on foot for ingredients to cook with.

Horse riding is to be had from a centre less than a 10-minute drive from the site, with the 2,500 hectares’ worth of trees in the Forest of Brocéliande to canter past a half an hour’s journey away. Equestrian types might like Loudéac town (25 minutes) too, home to five annual races and an August horse festival. Alternatively, carve out some time for French culture at Brittany’s capital Rennes, a place of pretty public gardens, a huge cathedral and a museum displaying pieces by Picasso.
