If you like hols heavy on water activities, where better to pitch up than on a riverbank? Here, it’s the banks of the Saône river, and you’ll be staying at the family-friendly Camping De L'Arquebuse just outside Athée, half an hour's drive from Dijon. Kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and fishing are all on the cards here, and the local swimming pool is next door for splashes away from the river. On site there’s plenty more active stuff going on, including volleyball games, trampolining and pétanque tournaments. And if that’s not enough to tire the kids out, there’s also a playground. Foodie supplies can be picked up a 10-minute walk away in Auxonne, for folk planning to blaze up their own barbecue fare, along with various eateries for tastes of local fare. Practical stuff on site includes amenity blocks with toilets and showers and a washing-up area. There’s also a launderette with ironing kit (handy news for those whose packing style leaves them a tad rumpled).

Liked: A recepció molt amables, càmping tranquil, bany justet, però suficient per fer estada curta. L, entorn bonic, al costat del riu.

Disliked: Mosquits , normal per la zona humída. No hi havia paper de water al bany, ni cap endoll

Liked: Loved the open space,the view of the lake and the boats going passed. It's a lovely 10 minute walk into town at the side of the river.
Lots of space and we saw families, couples and lone travels great for cycle holidays,camping and touring.

Disliked: The bathroom facilities are basic,very old and tired.

Liked: It was spacious and it was well located to a nice town. It was quite peaceful and calm.

Disliked: Toilets were not the cleanest but they were ok. Facilities were a bit dated.

Liked: Easy walking access to the town. Fairly quiet if you pitched away from main road and children's play area.

Disliked: Had to get water from sanitary block. No taps available around the site itself. Restaurant times of opening were clearly shown on the door but were wrong! Bar not open until 7pm and if you only wanted a drink instead of a meal it didn't seem to go down well. Food menu was very limited although tasty. Wi-Fi only available free outside reception. Staff/owners were onsite every evening but weren't very friendly or interactive with campers. Washing machine tokens seemed expensive. Limited number of toilets and showers. The website mentioned swimming pool next door (apparently now demolished) and beach. It had neither.

Local attractions

There are plenty of ways to explore this part of the Côte-d'Or. A top choice is to link up with the ‘blue route’, a scenic cycling and walking path which runs along the Saône, from Lyon to Haute-Saône. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a bird's-eye view from a hot air balloon (it’s possible to leave directly from the site). Load up the car for days out instead – 20 minutes away in Dole you can take tours of the Collégiale Notre-Dame de Dole church, Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de Mont-Roland and Museum of Fine Arts. If you’d prefer outdoor explores, aim for a wander in the pretty Jardin de Landon or splashing times at Aquaparc Isis. The capital city of Burgundy, Dijon (half an hour), is another fine choice for a visit. It may be known the world over for its mighty fine mustard, but it’s also a big wine-making area, so wine tours and tastings should be on the schedule here. It’s also got impressive buildings aplenty – on your to-see list should be the Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne de Dijon and the Church of Notre-Dame of Dijon, as well as the vast Palace of the Dukes, which houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
