Make haste to Chez Marie Roulotte if you want a cosy country getaway in Lower Normandy. At this site, you will stay in bohemian trailers that have travelled and seen the world – just as you’re set to do, as they're handily positioned just a 15-minute drive from Les Gorges de la Vire, 45 minutes from Bayeux and an hour from the historic landing beaches of Omaha beach and Arromanches.
The simple trailers are set in a sustainable two-and-a-half-acre plot planted with apple trees. They each have their own space with a picnic table, making it easy to max out your time in nature. Sheep live on the land, and you may well find that they decide to come over and say hello.
The trailers have a cosy setup with bed linen and a kitchenette provided and covered toilets installed in the garden nearby. There's no need to do much except roll out of bed in the mornings, as a continental breakfast is included in your stay and served in the communal building. This building has a shared kitchen, shower room, toilets and a lounge area with piano and guitars.
Contemplating an active holiday? Chez Marie Roulotte is well situated for getting out to Lower Normandy hiking trails, cycling trails (like the EuroVelo 4 and VéloWestNormandy) and kayaking activities. There is a secure bicycle storage room on site for those touring with bikes.
One last thing – splendid Mont Saint-Michel is a 50-minute drive from the site should you want to tick the famed island abbey off your bucket list…

Local attractions
You’ve likely heard of the Bayeux Tapestry, showing the 1066 Norman invasion of England in spectacular form, but that’s not the only thing that makes Bayeux (45 minutes’ drive) worthy of your precious time. On the Aure river, the destination has half-timbered houses, a Norman-Gothic cathedral and plenty of other historic spots.
There are lots of historic sites within driving distance of Chez Marie Roulotte, in fact, from Caen’s castle and memorial museum (45 minutes) to Saint-Lô, with its long tradition of horse racing (25 minutes).
Prefer to stay active rather than tour the sights? Take charge of a canoe or kayak at Les Gorges de la Vire (15 minutes) or brave the bungee jump, mountain-biking trails and giant zipwire at AJ Hackett Normandie (20 minutes).
From Granville (45 minutes), you could take a boat to the Chausey Islands after pottering around the medieval Upper Town and Christian Dior museum. A little wildlife can be introduced to your trip too with a visit to Zoo de Champrépus (35 minutes); it has animals such as tigers and lemurs.
