Camping Le Grand Batard

- Peaceful, off-grid farm camping at Le Grand Bâtard in the Dordogne
- Abbaye d’Échourgnac 50 minutes by bike; Saint-Aulaye an hour
- Set on the Camino Francés pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela
Tucked away under mature trees in a sleepy corner of the Dordogne, Camping Le Grand Batard sits in a tiny, rural hamlet of the same name, a secluded spot on the famed Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. It’s a farm site catering to hikers and cyclists looking for a peaceful night’s rest on the Camino Francés (eventually) leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Despite the fact that you are deep in the countryside here, you’re well catered for. There’s a basics shop in Le Grand Bâtard (five minutes’ walk), and you can stock up on home-produced meat and eggs from the site owners to transform into meals in the no-frills camp kitchen.
If you’d rather get someone else to do the cooking for you, ten minutes’ bike ride (or 40 minutes’ walk) takes you to the village of Eygurande-et-Gardedeuil, where there is a cosy bar serving home-cooked local dishes.
Please note this simple site does not have any access for vehicles or parking facilities. Partially shaded grass pitches are all completely off grid, and solar power is utilised for lighting, showers, washing-up sinks and composting lavatories.

Local attractions
The Cistercian Abbaye d’Échourgnac (50 minutes by bike) has a popular shop selling artisan cheeses alongside jams made from fruits grown in the orchard. The nuns run meditation retreats, and you can also visit for prayers and services several times a day.
The medieval bastide town of Saint-Aulaye (an hour) is worth a peek for its pretty Romanesque church and grand Renaissance-era château. Learn about the production of local cognacs in the Musée du Cognac et du Vin, and if you’re there in summer, take time off from cultural jaunts for a dip in the River Dronne from the sandy beach.
There’s another popular beach at the Grand Étang La Jemaye (an hour and 20 minutes), and in Montpon-Ménestérol (40 minutes), you can follow the Voie Verte des Berges de l’Isle walking route along the River Isle to the Pont de Montpon-Ménestérol bridge. Longer hikes lead to the lakes and streams of the Forêt de la Double (55 minutes), a haven for birdwatchers on the lookout for hen harriers and buzzards.
