  • Sustainable hostel in the rainforest a mile from Drake Bay town
  • Jungle tours, Corcovado trips and snorkelling outings available
  • Part of a property owned by the same family since the 1920s
Ready for a taste of adventure? Rio Agujitas EcoFarm Hostel may be only a mile from the town of Drake Bay, but this Punatrenas site is pretty well buried in the rainforest, offering guests the chance to immerse themselves in this incredible natural environment. Getting here is part of the experience – you can walk here from the town centre in about half an hour or take a taxi for a few minutes, but either way you’ll still need to walk the final 400 metres and cross two small rivers. They’re not deep, but rainfall can cause them to swell – in extreme cases this can affect reservations, but it’s best to come prepared for an intrepid journey in any case. Once you’ve arrived you’ll be staying at a sustainable site within a property that’s been developed by the same family since their forebears were among the area’s first settlers in the 1920s. How you choose to set up your jungle stay is up to you – you could sign up for some of the excursions organised by the owners (snorkelling activities and jungle night tours among them) or simply spend your time hanging out in one of the hammocks while gazing out at the greenery all around. There’s free wifi too, so you could squeeze in a bit of remote work and/or social media time as well if you like. This is a friendly place where you’re likely to meet visitors from all over the world at the colourful social space or while cooking meals in the shared kitchen. Other facilities include toilets, showers and a drying room for any of your kit that gets damp while you’re out and about.

Local attractions

Probably the best way to get to know this area is to take the tours offered by the hostel – this is a family that grew up here in the rainforest, so they know the place as well as anyone. Jungle tour options include day trips to the Corcovado National Park, twilight tours and night tours to see nocturnal species. And it’s not just the land that has some interesting wildlife to spot – the hostel is only about a mile from the coast, so you could also sign up for a snorkelling tour, taking you on a boat to Caño Island Reserve in search of turtles, rays, sharks and other marine life. Spend some time chilling on the sands of Playa Colorada when you get back.
