- Wilderness resort on the shoreline of Puntzi Lake in the Chilcotin
- Surrounded by nature trails for hiking, mountain bikes and ATVs
- Boat docks, boat rentals and store selling bait, ice and firewood
Going on a bear hunt? Arm yourselves with binoculars and fully charged cameras when tramping forth from Barney’s Lakeside Resort, for you never can tell at which moment you’ll spot a black bear, a deer, a wild horse, a caribou or any of the other critters that lurk in the woods around these parts…
As the name suggests, the park has a fab shoreline setting on Puntzi Lake, an excellent Chilcotin spot to fish for trout and salmon for your evening cookout. Fishing boats, bait and other bits of kit can be acquired from the site’s own boat dock, as can canoes and kayaks for those who’d prefer just to paddle around.
Keep those binoculars and cameras with you if you head out onto the lake too – this is an absolutely top-notch area for birdwatching, being British Columbia’s only nesting spot for the American white pelican and a haven for all manner of other passing birds, including curlews, falcons, grebes and Arctic terns.
The quiet rural vibe here is part of the draw for all that wildlife, as it is too for the humanfolk. To preserve the peace, facilities have been kept to a minimum: just a bathhouse, picnic tables and a store selling ice, essential groceries and firewood for folk who fancy getting toasty round the campfire.

Local attractions
It’s all about the nature around here, and there are many ways to get out and about in search of native beasts and epic scenery. Stride out on one of the hiking trails, hire a canoe to paddle on the lake or explore by mountain bike, ATV or on horseback (ask on site for details of how to book these trips).
Other lovely areas to visit for walks and bike rides include Bull Canyon, an hour away, for riverside hikes following the gorgeously green Chilcotin River, and Farwell Canyon (two to three hours), home to wild horses and big-horn sheep.
Moving on, it’ll take you three hours or so to drive to Williams Lake (check out the Williams Lake Stampede if you’re in town on the right weekend) or five hours to get to Bella Coola on the west coast to hike on mountain paths and admire the art of the First Nations Nuxalk people.
