Some people might like to think of Air Spa Lohovo as a wellness retreat for their lungs – and indeed the air is fresh, clear and bright at this intimate, family-friendly site in the northwestern Una-Sana canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
With forested hills all around, and the rugged splendours of Una National Park (half an hour) just across the nearby river Una, this is a blissfully peaceful spot. Those who book a holiday here get to experience a slower pace of life by staying in well-equipped wooden cottages in the middle of green, lush woodland. Dogs are welcome guests too, and they will probably wag their tail in excited anticipation of epic walks in the surrounding hills or along the river, which runs within a deep canyon.
Pretty Waterfall View (Beach) is less than three kilometres away (five minutes); here, in addition to swimming in fabulously clear waters, you get equally fabulous views of the Lohovo waterfalls. Those who want a wee shot of adrenaline can join a whitewater rafting expedition.
Alternatively, you might decide to explore the area on two wheels (bike hire is available on site); or just do very little and kick back outside your bungalow, dipping in and out of the pool.
There’s a communal barbecue area if you fancy meeting fellow guests at a cookout; the nearest supermarket is a 10-minute drive away, on the M5, or there are lots of shops in Bihać (15 minutes), where there are also multiple dining options.

Local attractions
Atop a lushly wooded hill overlooking the Una river valley, Sokolac Fort (also known as the Old Town of Sokolac, 15 minutes’ drive) has witnessed empires rise and fall during its centuries-long history. The site itself was occupied as early as the Bronze Age, as revealed by archeological finds in the area.
Crossed by the Una, Bihać has large swathes of splendid riverfront parkland. In town, the medieval Fethija Mosque (which was a Catholic church until the late 16th century) has a splendid tall minaret, while the Captain’s Tower houses displays on the town’s history.
Across the border, in Croatia, the Central Monument of the White Streams (50 minutes) sits in ruins in the middle of a forested valley, its concrete base a reminder of what once was a 15-metre structure honouring the casualties of World War II.
