  • Wild camping in Halls Gap, on the edge of Grampians National Park
  • Halls Gap Zoo five minutes’ drive; MacKenzie Falls half an hour
  • Barbecue provided; campfires allowed; kangaroos and other wildlife
Ready for a spot of wild camping with far-reaching views of Grampians National Park (15 minutes’ drive)? Then consider making Grampians Bush Camp your base when exploring this area of forest-covered mountains, swimming lakes and dramatic waterfalls. This simple site sits between Pomonal (five minutes) and Halls Gap (10 minutes), in the Australian state of Victoria. This is a dog- and family-friendly site, though be aware that it also welcomes naturists (in case you need to shield your children’s eyes), with shaded pitches on level, natural bush terrain. Amenities are limited to one flushable toilet (and please note there is no drinkable water), but what Grampians Bush Camp does have (besides its splendid location, of which more in a minute) is heaps of resident wildlife, and the entire family can join in spotting curious kangaroos, deer and emus. After seeing kangaroos hopping around near your pitch, you might not be in the mood for kangaroo steak on the barbecue (which is provided); you’ll find plenty of grillable alternatives in the convenience stores of nearby towns; alternatively, there are supermarkets in Stawell (20 minutes). The main attraction here is Grampians National Park, of course. The site is just on the other side of Boronia Peak from Lake Bellfield (15 minutes), which is popular for swimming, canoeing and fishing, plus picnicking; if you’re up for a challenging hike, you can tackle the rugged Pinnacle Walks (starting from Halls Gap) up to a lookout with expansive views over the reserve. After that, if you need to cool down a little, there are shallow rockpools for paddling at Splitters Falls (10 minutes).

Local attractions

The kangaroos on site not enough to satisfy your passion for wildlife? Halls Gap Zoo (five minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk) more than steps up to the plate with meerkats, giraffes and red pandas, plus native species such as wallabies and dingos. As part of their Animal Encounters sessions, you can feed cheetahs and handle meerkats. Check out the rock art at Bunjil’s Shelter (15 minutes), in the Black Range Scenic Reserve. This cave painting, which dates back at least a millennium, portrays Bunjil (the creator, according to Aboriginal lore) flanked by two dingos. While you’re in Grampians National Park, don’t miss the dramatic MacKenzie Falls (half an hour), which you can admire from the observation deck high above the MacKenzie River. For a different perspective, climb the 260 steps leading right down to the base of the cascade, where you might also feel the water spray on your face.
