  • Well-equipped family site just outside Airlie Beach, on Pioneer Bay
  • Whitsunday Great Walk and Proserpine town both 15 minutes’ drive
  • Pool and multiple waterslides; kids’ club; massages; open-air cinema
Travelling with the kids but also very much looking forward to some ‘me time’? BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort might be the answer to the prayers of every stressed-out parent in the land. This Cannonvale site, just outside Airlie Beach (five minutes’ drive), on Pioneer Bay, is so well equipped to keep children entertained that you might not see much of them at all during your stay here. Just what are those child-friendly activities, you might ask? Well, the jewel in the site’s crown is the humongous water park, with a large lagoon-style pool, a paddling area for toddlers and not one, not two… but 13 (you read that right) colourful waterslides. If running up the stairs and along the bridges that connect the waterslides isn’t enough to tire the kids out, you can direct them to the play area, with jumping pillows, pedal karts and a miniature golf course. If your offspring are less into running around and more into unleashing their creativity, the kids’ club arranges crafting and painting sessions. Meanwhile budding zoologists might have already found the way to the Animal Park, populated by lambs, ducks and inquisitive goats. And while the kids are having (possibly) the time of their lives, what do parents get up to? They might be having a relaxing massage poolside or a game of tennis, or maybe making friends in the communal barbecue area while grilling sausages for dinner. In the evening, the whole family can get together to watch a film on the big open-air screen.

Local attractions

Charter a boat from Airlie Beach and head to Whitsunday Islands National Park for a day of snorkelling in crystal-clear waters and hiking through lush vegetation-covered hills to lookout points with gorgeous views. Or just relaxing on spectacular beaches, like long, sandy Whitehaven or tiny, sheltered, child-friendly Turtle Bay. Whitsunday Great Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a long-distance trail going through the ancient woodland, rainforest and mangroves (and across the streams) of Conway National Park. On your hike, keep an eye out for local residents, such as cockatoos and other birds, plus geckos and butterflies. The Proserpine Historical Museum, in the town of Proserpine (15 minutes) displays artefacts relating to the history of the region – from the Indigenous people to European settlers and beyond. On the outskirts of the town, at the Whitsunday Crocodile Safari, you can sail the Proserpine River and see crocs, assorted reptiles and birds in the mangroves.
