  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • Farm shop, coffee hut, bar and pizzas available in high season
Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas. You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you). The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele. Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: in the high season, a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. A bar and pizzas are also available at peak times.

Beach Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I liked the toilets ,they were very clean. There were heaters, a hair dryer, and everything else you might need. There were also different shops where you could get coffee, cocktails, and even pizza, which was a nice touch. But the best part was the view and how you could reach the beach in just two minutes

Disliked: The only downside was that the toilets were a bit far from the campsite ,having an extra one would have made things much better.

Beach Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent facilities.
My sister and I stayed for one night midweek in May.
The site slopes but worth staying. Just be prepared and take your levelling blocks.
Enjoyed the beautiful views, tranquility and walk along the coastal path straight from site.
We resisted the temptation to stay for pizza on Friday.
A happy spaniel assisting with mowing the fields was fun to watch.

3-amp Carn Llidi View electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Site facilities, staff very friendly and helpful

Disliked: The location of the electric hook ups (3 amp) close to the cliff hedge and high winds meant my tent poles (4 of them) broke within a couple of hours and we had to return home. This is obviously no one’s fault but I feel others should be informed that the low hedges and high winds mean your tent might not be strong enough. The staff were very helpful and friendly when I asked for help however I wouldn’t recommend this site for tents, the site was mainly campervans and the small 1/2 man tents close to the ground.
We are seasoned campers and my tent is a vango Keswick II 600 but it still wasn’t good enough to weather the winds.

From the manager: Hi Michelle,

Thanks for your review. I'm glad to see that you were happy the site facilities and staff, and yet you've given us a 4/10 due to weather, which is disappointing and out of our control.

I understand you won't be returning, but for the benefit of future campers who may read your review, I wish to point out that we were fully booked that bank holiday weekend, and although many were in camper vans as you say, we had lots of tents. Some of whom decided to pitch up in different fields further from the coast, or who saw the forecasted wind and brought smaller, sturdier tents.

The price we sometimes pay for a sea view is that the wind blows in off the sea. We have thousands of tents here every year and few problems. The 3amp hookup you chose is the one closest to the coast, no doubt due to the spectacular views!

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land. There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months. Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
