  • Friendly well-maintained site with easy access to the M4
  • A 20-minute walk to the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre and popular trails
  • A short walk cafés and bus stops in Newport's scenic Ridgeway area
Looking for a handy dog-friendly base from which it’s easy to visit the likes of Cardiff and the Wye Valley? Hold your horses, for Northern Hay Stable is a very friendly family-run site next to a horse-riding school in the Ridgeway area of Newport. The Ridgeway area is a scenic part of Newport with views of the city – and handily enough, Northern Hay Stables is a 20-minute walk from one of its most popular dog-friendly cafés. Closer by, 10 minutes’ walk away from the site, there’s also an old-fashioned café serving tasty ice cream. When you want to explore the city, there is a handy 15-minute connection to the city centre from the bus stop five minutes’ walk away. Otherwise, bring your bicycle to this well-maintained site, as it’s a 20-minute walk from the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre. This particular spot is on National Cycle Route 47 and has access to a pretty canal towpath and the Sirhowy Valley Walk. The Allt-Yr-Yn Nature Reserve is also a 40-minute walk away. For trips further afield, the site is just a one-minute drive from Junction 27 of the M4, which will take you to Cardiff in around 25 minutes and the Wye Valley National Landscape in around 40 minutes. Well-maintained facilities at this friendly site include a toilet and shower block and charging facilities. Barbecues have the green light.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Not too busy
Friendly

Disliked Noise from motorway
Only 2 fencing lines to keep horses in field next to site, this caused an issue with our dog, especially with the sheep that were in the campsite facing off with him as well.

Recommend this place for ease of access to cardiff

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked The friendly welcome and the help received. We had a water leak on the fresh water tank and our host got underneath with his spanners and plumber's mate, doing his best to tide us over until we got home.
Although a bit quirky, the small site had everything we needed and shower/toilet was clean
Very handy for a stop over by the M4

Electric hardstanding touring caravan pitch

Liked Got the choice of where we wanted to stay, hosts were so nice and gave up advice on where to go. Sam offered to drop us to the train station and told us how to get straight into cardiff. Would definitely stay there again if we go back to Wales :)

I would consider this to be more of a Britstop option.

Electric hardstanding touring caravan pitch

Liked The people were lovely and friendly.

Disliked We chose not to stay as our dog is very anxious and would not have dealt very well with the livestock being near him, also the motorway was a lot closer than we had expected, this would have been a problem for us. The owner was extremely understanding and didn't charge us and also said we were welcome to come back if we didn't find an alternative site (which was a risk on a Friday afternoon of a bank holiday weekend)

Only really a one night stop.…
