  • Simple site in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons)
  • A 10-minute walk from Penderyn village; Swansea 40 minutes’ drive
  • Views across the Welsh valleys; hiking trails leading to waterfalls
A 10-minute walk from the village of Penderyn, on the southern fringes of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), Heol Las Farm Just Camping is a family-friendly site on a farm with splendid views across the Welsh valleys and mountains. An extensive network of hiking trails crosses the area, which is known as Waterfall Country – no prizes for guessing why. Following the course of the River Hepste to the west leads to cascades like Sgwd Yr Eira, where you’ll be able to walk behind the curtain of water, and thundering Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, a splendid spot with a cool pool in which to rest your weary feet. Alternatively, head to Porth yr Ogof (10 minutes’ drive) to find the trailhead for the Four Waterfalls Walk. Paths get wet and pretty slippery, so be sure to pack boots with excellent grip. Admire the wild orchids that grow on the marshy grasslands of Cwm Cadlan Nature Reserve, or check out the former quarries on the slopes of Moel Penderyn (both five minutes). After all that exploration, reward yourself with a visit to Penderyn Brecon Beacons Distillery (five minutes), where you can tour the facilities and sample single-malt Welsh whiskies. There are a couple of pubs in nearby Penderyn village, and shops in Hirwaun (five minutes). Fresh water is available on site, and there is a portable toilet and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

Highlights in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) include Pen-y-Fan mountain (10 minutes’ drive), with paths ranging from easy to challenging; Cantref - Adventure Farm (half an hour), where the kids might meet lambs, ride ponies or simply let off some steam in outdoor and indoor playing areas; and Llangors Lake (35 minutes), a popular watersport hub. For a day at the seaside, head to Swansea (40 minutes), where the wide sandy beach follows the gentle arc of Swansea Bay. Interactive exhibits at the National Waterfront Museum explore how the Industrial Revolution affected the region, while the Dylan Thomas Centre has a permanent exhibition on the Swansea-born poet. Following Swansea Bay round to the south west leads to the Mumbles Hill Local Nature Reserve (50 minutes), an area of grassland and woodland where you might spot woodpeckers, skylarks and other birds, plus several species of butterflies. Dating from the late 19th century, Mumbles Pier is an iron structure with a fishing platform and a lifeboat station at the end.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendliness of staff, ease of access to site, cleanliness of portaloos and location to local attractions.
If you're looking for a basic, cheap stay somewhere that's close to local attractions, this is it! The site is a field that belongs to a local farm. Drinking water is from a hose coming off the mains line from their house and the toilets provided are three portaloos. The toilets were kept lovely and clean and have toilet roll/hand sanitizer provided.
The field is slightly on a hill but if you camp near the top it's fairly flat. Views from the tent were stunning.
We really enjoyed our stay and was just what we were looking for.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lots of space to pitch up, cheap and simple just what you need when you are out and about visiting all the beautiful places around here! Portaloos well maintained, lady is lovely who runs it. I stayed here last year two for two nights and will come again.

Disliked: No shower but what do you expect for the price. Perfect for what you pay.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location was good, as it was close to the four waterfall trail.
Communication and payment was easy.

Disliked: The field is very uneven. For toilets there is no sanitary house but portable toilets like on festivals. They were clean and smelled good, but I personally still don’t like them. No table or sink to wash the dishes, just a hose to take water from. It’s very very basic.
