  • Small, quiet and family-friendly North Wales farm site near Wrexham
  • A 25-minute drive to Chester Zoo; an hour to Snowdonia National Park
  • Spacious dog-friendly pitches; shops, pubs and cafés 20 minutes’ walk
Fancy a foray to a peaceful site near Wrexham in North Wales? The pitches at Coxwood Farm are set on an acre of secluded farmland, surrounded by mature oak trees and securely fenced in away from the road. Quiet and rural this spot may well be, with spacious pitches and picnic benches tucked away under those sprawling trees, but it also puts guests in pole position for exploring Snowdonia National Park and the bright lights of Chester. Your dogs are welcome to join you here, but please bear in mind that this is a working farm so they must remain on leads at all times when around the pitches – for more of a chance to hare about there are plenty of footpaths directly accessed from the site, and the lane outside is pretty peaceful and safe for a quick doggy stroll. You can dig out local amenities – pubs, cafés and takeaways – in the villages of Marford and Gresford, both around 20 minutes’ walk. Going down the self-catering route? There’s an essentials shop for groceries in Marford, and supermarkets for bigger stocking-up expeditions in Wrexham or at Broughton Shopping Park (both 15 minutes’ drive). On the practical front, there’s running water and a single toilet and shower block on the pitches, with the grey waste facility tucked away behind that. Hardstand parking is also available for cars away from the pitches.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The views are amazing and the place is so peaceful. Only 5 spaces so nice and private. Nothing around as on a farm.
We walked to the pub along the bridal path, this took about 40mins and then to the shop adds an extra 10mins to the journey.
Dogs are allowed and camp fires. It was just what we needed.

Liked: Really nice location, spacious pitches and lovely surroundings.

Disliked: I called to ask a few questions before I booked and was told someone would call back, they didn't. I made a booking and didn't receive any info re how to find the site ect. I called when we arrived to ask directions and was given very brief info in a rush. Felt that communication could have been better, specially as we had not been before. Also felt that £36 per night was very expensive compared to other small 5 pitch sites we have visited. We also were reminded why we prefer Adult only sites. we knew this was not adult only so our error.

From the manager: I would say thanks for your review but I think its a bit harsh.

Firstly, I will apologise you didn't get a call back, we're a working farm and I was passed the msg and it slipped my mind, apologies. I don't understand how you say you didn't receive any information about the site and finding us as that should all come to you upon booking via Pitch Up.

I always smile when people complain about the price, I think if people actually paused and broke down the £36 and subtracted Pitch Up commission, electric/water, refuse disposal, septic tank disposal and general site maintenance it doesn't leave much.

I don't know how people can mark us down on accommodation - its your van or caravan your staying in we just provide the location. Facilities and activities, we're a small site you know what you're booking. You've marked us down on child friendliness yet admitted in your own review you prefer adult only sites so its not us that aren't child friendly. Wi-Fi is totally out of our control, we don't offer it and whilst we appreciate mobile signal is patchy its not under our control and you can get phone signal on site.

Finally, whilst I'm sorry to hear you wouldn't visit again its probably for the best, I'm not sure however why you'd recommend us to friends.

Great site, clean facilities, just what we needed for 1 night.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The peace and quiet and the gorgeous views. We visited here at Christmas and wanted to come back and we finally did. We originally booked 3 nights but booked an extra night in the end. I love the small site and the pitches are spread out. We will definitely be back again in the future. Dog friendly.

Local attractions

Kids part of your holiday plans? Then it’s Chester Zoo (25 minutes’ drive) for you, with its big cats, keeper talks and animal-feeding sessions, before treating them to goodies at the Ice Cream Farm (half an hour). Wear them out on the wacky slides and rides at The Crocky Trail (25 minutes), and take care of any rainy days with a visit to Chester’s Storyhouse (20 minutes), where you can see blockbuster films and seasonal pantos. Active types can be in Snowdonia in an hour, for sporty adventures on hills, mountains and numerous lakes, as well as catching a few artificial waves on the surf lake at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (also an hour). For quieter sorts of Welsh escapes, the ivy-clad remains of photogenic Holt Castle (10 minutes) are well-worth discovering, and there are pretty walks alongside the River Dee nearby. The National Trust-owned Chirk Castle (25 minutes) was once a mighty medieval fortress and now has elaborate interiors stuffed with priceless antiques to tour, while at Erddig (20 minutes, also National Trust) you can wander spectacular formal water gardens.
