  • Back-to-basics site on the edge of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia)
  • Caernarfon 20 minutes’ drive; Zip World Penrhyn Quarry half an hour
  • Food van on site; access to the Llanberis and Snowdown Ranger paths
Looking for a simple site that can be used as a base camp for summiting Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)? Consider Camping in Llanberis, which sits on the north-western fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). It has direct access to the Llanberis Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path, two routes (of varying difficulties) that lead to the summit of the tallest mountain in Wales. Suited to the outdoorsy type who doesn’t expect any luxury facilities, this is a back-to-basics spot, though there are some amenities, including a toilet block with coin-operated hot showers, a washing-up corner, a fridge, freezer and microwave, and phone-charging plugs. There is also a food van for easy meals after your efforts. The on-site team is happy to hand over some friendly local knowledge and advice. There’s no need to book or find the car parks for Yr Wyddfa here; in addition, the Pen y Pass paths are also easily accessible by car or a Sherpa bus. Camping in Llanberis is just a 10-minute stroll from Llanberis, where there are shops, restaurants, cafés and attractions like the Llanberis Lake Railway. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Snowdon Mountain Railway station for those who don’t want to make the climb to the summit. It’s also a great base camp for those attending running events like Ultra-Trail Snowdonia and the Snowdon Marathon. The Snowdonia Slate Trail, a long-distance path stretching for 83 miles, is a 15-minute drive away.

What customers say

This campsite offers a superb location with stunning mountain views, perfect for hikers and those visiting Snowdonia. Visitors frequently praise the friendly and helpful staff, good value for money, and basic but adequate facilities, including a warm drying room with a microwave and fridge. Campfires are permitted. The site is hilly, with some guests noting a struggle to find completely flat pitches. While generally clean, some facilities, particularly showers, received mixed reviews regarding cleanliness and the need for payment. The proximity to Llanberis village and Snowdon paths is a significant advantage.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I absolutely loved this trip! The price I paid was nothing compared to the stunning view I woke up to every morning. We stayed on top of a hill, and every time we opened our tent, we were greeted by the most breathtaking view of the mines and lake—honestly, such a beauty!

The facilities were basic but had everything you need: two showers and two toilet cubicles each for men and women, plus two outdoor toilet cubicles with washrooms. There are drying facilities you can use for £1 (a nice bonus!) and even a small fridge for campers. There are also campfire spaces, and the site sells extra essentials like logs and pegs if needed.

We hiked up Snowdon using the Watkin Path, which was only 30 minutes from the campsite—super convenient! The Snowdon station was also just a 5-minute drive if you prefer taking the steam train up the mountain. I would comeback for a quick weekend getaway just for the campsite view!

Disliked There’s honestly not much to dislike. The campsite itself has no flat ground, but that’s just nature—if it weren’t for the hills, you wouldn’t get those stunning mountain views! The showers cost £1 for an 8-minute shower and can occasionally play up, but for a basic campsite, I was just glad they had proper showers available.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Pick your own pitch
Shower block/toilet was clean and pleasant
Charging station was a god send
Fire pits/bbqs allowed

Disliked Just be aware it is very hilly, I wish we'd pitched closer to the toilet block in hind sight as a walk up to the showers after climbing snowdon was a bit of a struggle!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Not as “back to basics” as we had expected - hot showers, shared fridge and microwave facilities, a shop on site with friendly staff. Overall we had a really lovely experience and the views are to die for. Plus, an excellent position for Snowdon. Approximately 1.5km walk from the start of the Llanberis trail.

Disliked Very hilly (as to be expected with the area!) so it was a little hard to find a flat pitch. Be prepared to settle for “flatish”

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We booked this campsite through pitchup online literally 10 days before arrival.
It’s probably one of the best campsites we have stayed in. The views are absolutely phenomenal and just breathtaking (we got lucky with the weather).
The campsite facilities were also really good, clean toilets and showers (pay for hot water) they also had washing machine and dryer facilities with a separate washing station for all your dishes, pots and pans. The use of a fridge and power to charge your power banks and phones.
The owners/lady who works behind reception was really helpful (we were climbing snowdonia while we were there and she was very informative with what routes to take). The location of the campsite is also brilliant as you have Llanberis town which is about a 15/20 min walk (bare in mind the walk back is up a massive hill not ideal if you struggle with mobility) there are lots of shops, restaurants and bars, you’ve got Lake Llyn Padarn where you can swim in or take a kayak out or just spend the day by their having a picnic.

Local attractions

If you want to balance your outdoorsy pursuit with a bit of history, head to Caernarfon (20 minutes’ drive), where a fortress built by Edward I in the late 13th century sits where the river Seiont flows into the Menai Strait. Across the Seiont is a large green area with a skatepark and a waterfront path. Lined with independent kiosks, Garth Pier in Bangor (half an hour) stretches halfway across the Menai Strait, making the island of Anglesey seem so close you could almost touch it. There are more views of Anglesey from the Roman Camp, an area of woodland and lawns at the top of a hill overlooking the city. Those who want more thrills besides summiting Yr Wyddfa should visit Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (half an hour), where they can take a vertiginous flight across the lake of a disused quarry on what is said to be the world’s fastest zipwire. If you’re brave enough to keep your eyes open, you might catch a glimpse of the Welsh coastline while you’re in mid-air.
