Looking for a simple site that can be used as a base camp for summiting Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)? Consider Camping in Llanberis, which sits on the north-western fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). It has direct access to the Llanberis Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path, two routes (of varying difficulties) that lead to the summit of the tallest mountain in Wales. Suited to the outdoorsy type who doesn’t expect any luxury facilities, this is a back-to-basics spot, though there are some amenities, including a toilet block with coin-operated hot showers, a washing-up corner, a fridge, freezer and microwave, and phone-charging plugs. There is also a food van for easy meals after your efforts. The on-site team is happy to hand over some friendly local knowledge and advice. There’s no need to book or find the car parks for Yr Wyddfa here; in addition, the Pen y Pass paths are also easily accessible by car or a Sherpa bus. Camping in Llanberis is just a 10-minute stroll from Llanberis, where there are shops, restaurants, cafés and attractions like the Llanberis Lake Railway. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Snowdon Mountain Railway station for those who don’t want to make the climb to the summit. It’s also a great base camp for those attending running events like Ultra-Trail Snowdonia and the Snowdon Marathon. The Snowdonia Slate Trail, a long-distance path stretching for 83 miles, is a 15-minute drive away.

Liked: There are many fields to choose from some you can drive your car into me and my partner have stayed here twice and it’s very good nice amenities with a dryer and hot showers. Close to the route to walk snowdonia.

Disliked: there isn’t a toilet in every field unfortunately however it’s only a short walk away.

Liked: The view was amazing! The reception staff was very friendly and very helpful as it was our first time camping there. She helped with finding the route to llanberis path on snowdonia. The communal area was very nice.

Disliked: The toilets where we stayed near us wasn't as nice.

Liked: Plenty of space and great ground to pitch a tent, easy to get tent pegs etc into the ground. Stunning views, very quiet, great facilities.

Liked: Great views over the valley and looking up at snowdon.

Disliked: Toilets were a disgrace. 2 out of 4 where usable if you didn’t mind using a toilet with no seat then 3 out of 4.
The whole site is on a hill and difficult to find a spot to pitch your tent that you won’t roll to the end during the night. Staff were nice though. 👍🏻

Stayed here for the Slateman Triathlon- would come again.

Liked: OK site for an overnight base before climbing Snowdon. Close to the start of the Llanberis path and railway. Simple and no frills site. Acceptable price for 1 night.

Disliked: Narrow lane leading to site. Don't expect a flat site.

Disliked: Facilities was really poor toilets in top field was shocking and didn't flush . Shower block in main building had 2 showers in male block in-between toilets and wasn't very clean .
People queing for showers was a nightmare

If you want to balance your outdoorsy pursuit with a bit of history, head to Caernarfon (20 minutes’ drive), where a fortress built by Edward I in the late 13th century sits where the river Seiont flows into the Menai Strait. Across the Seiont is a large green area with a skatepark and a waterfront path. Lined with independent kiosks, Garth Pier in Bangor (half an hour) stretches halfway across the Menai Strait, making the island of Anglesey seem so close you could almost touch it. There are more views of Anglesey from the Roman Camp, an area of woodland and lawns at the top of a hill overlooking the city. Those who want more thrills besides summiting Yr Wyddfa should visit Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (half an hour), where they can take a vertiginous flight across the lake of a disused quarry on what is said to be the world’s fastest zipwire. If you’re brave enough to keep your eyes open, you might catch a glimpse of the Welsh coastline while you’re in mid-air.
