  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I have been camping at Fronalchen for a few years now, and I wouldn't camp anywhere else in this region.
The site is a back to basics campsite, which for me, at least is what camping is all about.
There are showers and toilets, an outdoor washing up area, an elsan disposal area, electric points, and a drinking water tap.
You choose your own pitch, and you are left to get on with it, although the owners are only a few minutes away if needed. The owners are friendly, helpful, and very accommodating.
The camping field is flat, well drained, although, being Wales, the entrance to the camping field can get a bit muddy at times with the rain. There is a river that runs alongside the field, which is perfect for the dogs, (and supervised kids), on those hot, summer days.
The views are spectacular!
It's the perfect place to relax and unwind, even though there is a Starbucks, and garage with a large shop just a ten minute walk away.
The little town of Dolgellau is also only a short drive, or a pleasant walk of around 30 minutes away.
I would 100% recommend this site and will continue to enjoy my visits here for years to come.

Disliked: Having to leave.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! Absolutely love this campsite!
We have been 4 times and already booked for are 5th trip,
This sites good for tents as we have never struggled with uneven pitches etc,
They are currently revamping the toilet blocks so have had temporary toilets and shower blocks there, the toilets were kept lovely and clean, constantly stocked with toilet paper, hand soaps, the showers were lovely and warm also kept clean,
The views from the campsite are stunning, and the star gazing of and evening is beautiful,
The owners and everyone who works there are all so lovely and very helpful,
We can’t wait to return in August and to return many more times, absolutely beautiful place to camp!
100% would recommend

Disliked: Can’t fault this campsite

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Had a really nice stay at this campsite in North Wales. The location was peaceful with beautiful surroundings, and it had a really relaxed, welcoming vibe. What stood out most was how easy everything was—from getting there to setting up. Access to the site was simple, with clear signage and well-maintained paths, which made arriving stress-free.

The facilities were clean and convenient, and the pitches were spacious with enough privacy. It was a great base for exploring the local area, with plenty of walks and views right on the doorstep.

Perfect for a laid-back camping trip—would definitely stay again!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Stunning views! The field for camping was huge so everyone had plenty of space. You could choose your own pitch and also have your car with you. The owner also sold wood for firepits which was quite cheap so it was lovely to have fires in the evenings. The showers were also lovely and hot.

Disliked: We knew this was a basic campsite but unfortunately it wasn't very clean. There was no hot water at the washing up area or in the toilets for hand washing and the soap dispenser in the ladies was was always empty. Also, the flooring in the ladies toilets was extremely damp, areas had been patched up and sometimes when brushing your teeth your felt like you were sinking!

From the manager: Thanks for the review. We will take your comments on board and discuss accordingly. We do clean the toilets and facilities as regular as possible but can become difficult when toilets are in constant use over peak times. Thanks again.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is my 4th or 5th time at the site since 2020.. every review I've left has been a positive one. I spent bank holiday Monday here on my own and felt very safe (even woth the wild winds). I was joined layer in the week by extended family who also loved the site. We have swam in the river and played in the field. Campfires and smores at nighttime and visited Barmouth Beach and Bala lake. We even arranged with the owners Nia and her husband to stay an extra night and leave on Sunday.. the skies at night have been beautiful 😍 the kids have loved getting back to basics with no TV or video games.. would highly recommend if you want a basic site where you have no choice but to relax and enjoy the scenery and the sound of the river.. can't wait to be back here and I haven't even left yet!

Disliked: The fact that others leave their waste and rubbish when there are ample bins at the start of the site and expect the owners to pick up after them..

From the manager: Thanks for the good score review. We apologise that we weren't what your were looking for - the site is normally quite calm but it goes without saying that the bank holiday weekend changes this. Thanks again.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
