  • Grass pitches on a family-run farm a 15-minute drive from Bangor
  • Plas Newydd House and Gardens 15 minutes’ drive; Conwy 25 minutes
  • Views of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia); woodland walks
Get away from it all and embrace tranquillity and nature at Nantrwydd Camping, a secluded site with non-electric grass pitches on a family-run farm. Guests have access to most of this 40-acre livestock farm, and they can follow various paths leading into spectacular countryside to explore forests, flower meadows and wetlands. And during your wanderings, you can take in distant views of the peaks of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). When the solitude of rural Gwynedd becomes too much (said no one ever…), the lively university city of Bangor – with its restaurants, bars and shops, plus the colourful Garth Pier stretching into the Menai Strait – is only a 15-minute drive away. And it’s not just Bangor that’s easy to reach from here. With the A487 just down the road from the site, you can link to the North Wales Expressway (A55) in about five minutes. And then you can choose to visit places like Anglesey (10 minutes’ drive), Conwy (25 minutes) and Llandudno (35 minutes). If you prefer mountain hikes to coastal adventures, Carnedd Llewelyn and Glyder Fawr (25 minutes) are just two of the summits you could tackle in Eryri. Back on site, a purpose-built toilet block comes with hot-water showers, and there is a washing-up area.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was excellent, nice and quiet with pitches spread out so you have you can have your own space. The facilities block was clean and in good order, with good hot showers, as well as space to charge phones, etc and a communal fridge. The owners were very friendly and accommodating when I had to amend our booking due to an error on my part.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Jenny, our host, was extremely kind and helpful (and gave us some really useful pointers for our days activities). The campsite was really big with enough space to allow privacy from other campers. Facilities were brilliant - we had access to a communal fridge, toilets, power socket, kettle, showers (with hot water!) and a lovely firepit area with benches. I would recommend campers to bring their own firewood (although there are nearby shops if you forget). Good phone connection and everything was really clean. Could not recommend this campsite more - if I'm back in Snowdonia, I know where I'll be camping.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Staff were friendly and informative (okay, maybe not the dog - who is deaf and is very cute). Nice short, flat grass and plenty of space. I liked that this was a "quiet" site with no music allowed. The shower/toilet block was lit up at night and there is a kettle and fridge. I used the kettle for my hot water bottle! I'd definitely stay here again!

Local attractions

On Anglesey, Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes’ drive) is an 18th-century National Trust property overlooking the Menai Strait. It’s known for a vast 58-foot mural by British artist Rex Whistler, and for its luxuriant grounds, with red squirrels and blossoming rhododendron bushes. Only the brave need make a note of this: at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (15 minutes) you can fly like Superman (as in, horizontally) across the quarry lake on the world’s fastest zipline (up to 100 miles an hour). Less hair-raising zipwires are also available, as are a three-kilometre kart circuit and a tour of the quarry. North Shore Beach in Llandudno is anchored at one end by a Victorian pier with food stalls, a fishing platform and a Ferris wheel. Ride the Great Orme Tramway to the top of the headland, checking out the ancient mines (and the fabulous views), then hike to the Gogarth North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve to spot orchids and butterflies.
