  • Touring pitches on a former model farm a 10-minute drive from Bangor
  • Penrhyn Castle & Garden five minutes’ drive; Llandudno 25 minutes
  • Dogs are welcome; just off the North Wales Expressway
Spending your holidays in north-western Wales and looking for a spot with easy access to both Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) and sandy beaches? Step forward, Iard Hendre. This family-friendly touring site sits right on the edge of Wales’s largest national park. Iard Hendre’s location just off the North Wales Expressway (A55) also puts a whole lot of other attractions within easy reach: from Irish Sea beaches like Llanfairfechan, to Bangor and the Menai Strait (all 10 minutes’ drive). The site occupies the grounds of a Grade II listed property built in the 1840s as a model farm. A restored Victorian stone cottage houses the reception building, where you can meet your hosts, the Innes family. Then drive on to your pitch (you can park right by it) and… well, there’s not much else to do besides taking in the views (all the way to Anglesey and the Eryri peaks) and planning the day’s itinerary. A stroll through the forested Parc Penrhyn Coast Path (10 minutes) is a good way to ease yourself into your hiking holiday, ahead of tackling more challenging trails in Coedydd Aber National Nature Reserve, home of the dramatic Aber Falls (20 minutes), or Eryri. Your canine companion is allowed on most local trails, though you might have to keep it on a lead at times. Back at the site, amenities include a toilet block and a washing-up area; picnic tables dot the large fields – and just as well: chances are you will want to eat alfresco while taking in the spectacular views.

Local attractions

A faux-medieval castle, National Trust - Penrhyn Castle & Garden (five minutes’ drive) was built in the 19th century by a family who made their fortune by mining slate and producing sugar. Their wealth is clearly on display in the gilded Drawing Room and the Grand Staircase, with its ornate ceiling. At Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (15 minutes), you get to fly across a lake – either on a regular zipline or on the Velocity zipwire, which reaches speeds of up to 100 miles an hour. You might be terrified, but do try to keep your eyes open: you wouldn’t want to miss the splendid views of Eryri and the coast. Conwy Castle (15 minutes) forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside a series of other fortresses (including Caernarfon) built by Edward I in the 1280s. Take a stroll along sandy Conwy Morfa Beach, then cross the Conwy Suspension Bridge and drive on to Llandudno (25 minutes) for a hike up Y Gogarth Great Orme Country Park.

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: We booked this late as we were walking Snowdon. I arrived in the dark the reception was locked I called the number and there was no answer. After walking round I couldn't see any hard standing and the only thing that looked like that was the carpark. If it was the carpark there was not an area that even came close to even. Aftrr 15 minutes wee got back in the motorhome and left.
Why this place is listed on pitchup is beyond me. You'd be better off parking in a lay by on the A55 to be honest. Never again!

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The owner was very friendly.

Disliked: This should be described as just an overgrown field rather than a campsite. On arrival we were told the showers did not work, and they had informed pitchup of this. I did not see this on the website. However, not only did the showers not work, there was no water at any sinks in any of the toilets either. On the website it says about pitches with picnic tables and in the grounds of a listed building. There are no pitches or picnic tables, it is literally a field. It is very close to the main road, which is extremely busy and noisy. There was another van in the field, parked across the middle of it, like it had been abandoned. Behind the field is an old coach with people living inside. Their washing was hanging out through the trees in the rain. The listed buildings were probably once really nice, but it is all run down at the moment. This should be listed as basic and somewhere to park for the night and be reflected in the price. We moved to another site, paid the same money, and the facilities were amazing.

From the manager: Dear anonymous,

We do apologise for your experience at iard hendre! We have been open for 2 weeks and you were our second booking. Nevertheless you have highlighted some glaring issues with the site in its early stages! And we take them on board as constructive feedback! There was some issues with the description online regarding showers which has now been updated !

We do feel some of your comments tough to take as we are very proud of the buildings, as Custodians of an historically important building which is an ongoing restoration project, I feel your comments a bit disrespectful! As for the site care taker living in a van with clothes hanging outside. This area is nowhere near the camping area and frankly has no baring on your stay!

None the less we take your comments seriously and will be adjusting people’s expectations with the description of the site so not to mislead anyone, which I feel from your comments you have been!

I offer my sincere apologies for your experience! Please get in contact and we will happily offer a refund!

Kind regards

James innes
