  • Peaceful glamping units at a 2,500-acre north Wales sheep farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Moel Famau; 35 minutes to Chester
  • Kitchen, barbecue and ensuite bathroom for each unit
Done with being cooped up at work and looking for a bit of space to relax? Well, there's no shortage of space at Penbedw Estate Glamping – this north Wales site spreads out over 2,500 acres of farmland, surrounded by woodlands, plains and mountains. There are only a small handful of units at this glamping site, and they’re so well spaced they’re in different postcodes (please check the Directions section for details) so that means you’ll have much of this gorgeous open space all to yourselves – although as this is a sheep farm you may have a few woolly neighbours around sometimes. It’s likely you’ll feel your shoulders drop as soon as you arrive here – and then the relaxation experience continues as you breathe the fresh air, take in the sounds of birdsong in the trees and look out at the green views all around (or up at the starry skies overhead at night). That said, if you need a little extra help, though, you can book massages or facials in your accommodation with prior notice. Staying here you’ll be within the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of options for hikes or gentle strolls around. For a bit more action, the local area has rafting, zipwires and various family attractions to fill your time with. Whether you’ve taken it easy or gone or an adrenaline kick, you'll be coming back to a cosy stay in a comfy glamping unit with its own bathroom, mini kitchen and barbecue. You can pick up supplies for these last two in Mold, 10 minutes’ drive away; if you don’t fancy cooking, there are handy pubs in the nearby villages of Cilcain and Nannerch.

Route directions

Although part of the same estate, the accommodation is in different places. Penbedw is a ringfenced circle with no roads running through it, so you will need to use a specific entrance (it may be helpful to think of a clock face, with the main entrance at 6 and the piggery at 2). For the yurts, use the main entrance at CH7 5QT, which is off the main road from Mold to Denbigh. For the piggery, use the postcode CH7 5RP, which will take you up a lane to the right hand side of the estate.

Local attractions

The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of the less visited AONBs, so space-seekers should do fairly well around here. Moel Famau (10 minutes' drive to the trailhead) is one of the best known spots but there are plenty of quiet trails around where you may well not see many other visitors. If you like a bit more activity, set off for a day at Chester Zoo (35 minutes’ drive) or seek adventure at the likes of Bala Lake, ZipWorld Betws-y-Coed and Adventure Parc Snowdonia (all within an hour). The pretty city of Chester (35 minutes) makes a good day out, for a circuit of the city walls and a wander among the half-timbered houses. And there’s always the option of castle or coast, too – Mold, Flint and Denbigh castles are all within a 20-minute drive, and a journey of half an hour will get you to beach days in Prestatyn or Rhyl.
