Picnic in your own private field

  • Private use of a peaceful off-grid caravan and bell tent
  • A 15-minute drive from Mold and 25 minutes from the nearest beach
  • Dog-friendly farmland setting with farm shop nearby
If you’re wanting to burrow down somewhere well away from any neighbours, Herbie’s Hideaway might be just the hidey hole you were foraging for. This private and peaceful off-grid glamping site gives its guests exclusive use of a renovated caravan and bell tent with their own personal field and woodland area. This is a true farmland setting, so you may quickly find yourself itching to sink your teeth into some fresh farm produce. Handily enough, Herbie’s Hideaway is 15 minutes’ walk away from a farm shop and there’s a gas cooker provided for you on site, so it's easy to get chopping and grilling. You won't be entirely without neighbours here – there are goats, chickens and ducks on the site’s smallholding a short walk away through the farmland and it's possible you may spot visiting owls and badgers. Access is down a woodland track, so there’s a short walk to get to the pitch. A trolley is available so you don’t have to carry your belongings on your back. Together, the caravan and bell tent sleep four people. Fresh water is kindly provided, as is basic lighting (and the water pump is powered by solar lighting). The caravan has a shower and composting toilet too. Other big perks here include the fact that the pitch is just a five-minute walk from the local pub, with another second pub option a 35-minute walk away (mini pub crawl anyone?). There’s no shortage of local walks either, and the A55 10 minutes’ drive away leads to plenty of north Wales attractions, plus Chester (35 minutes) and the coast. The closest beach is just 35 minutes’ drive away.

Liked: Away from it all. We had a great two nights here. Host Alison was lovely, helping us with our bags and showing us everything around to ensure we had a great stay. Had a problem with the water pump, but Alison ensured we had plenty of water and compensated us. Can't fault her hospitality.
The area is alone and means kids can run round to their hearts content without worry.
Must also recommend the Cherry Pie Inn a few minutes drive away. Cracking pub!

Disliked: The walk to the Hideaway was through a very muddy path that the cows were migrated over. Ensure you take your wellies!
I was very fortunate the second morning to get a lift through it on the qaud by the kind farmer who was passing. Can't thank her enough! The others went the other way back to the main road, where I went and picked them up.
Alison mentioned making the bell tent into a seating area, I think this would be a fab idea. We lit the fire in the evening, but alk the seating was wet, as it had been raining. The site can not control the weather though and it certainly didn't dampen our spirits!

Liked: Wow! What a beautiful hidden gem! So lucky to have found this, just booked a last minute one-night getaway for a little pick-me-up and it was so peaceful, relaxing, cute and cosy! Wish we’d been able to stay longer, will definitely be coming back! Inside the caravans and tent (you get all 3 to yourself 😍) they’re decorated with so much love and detail, including things like books, games, binoculars, Bluetooth speaker which we used whilst sat in front of the fire pit. The outside has had a lot of thought put into as well such as cute little tea cup bird feeders and solar lights and a converted horse box as a shower /loo. You could see and hear horses from the other field which was lovely, you have a stunning view of the sunset going down the mountains and you can hear owls at night and other wildlife. Perfect for nature lovers or if you want a peaceful break from everything. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly too and thank you for helping us with our bags and for the marshmallows, Welsh cakes, etc they were lovely little touch. Can’t wait to visit again!

Disliked: When we had to leave 😄

Liked: Everything! So peaceful and quiet, such a beautiful place to re-charge and just be! Loved the little finishing touches like the books, binoculars, den kit and the cute style of the caravans/ tent. Cannot tell you just how delightful it was spotting goats, ducks, hens, cows, horses and knowing there was owls nesting right near us and a badger set too! The hosts went out of their way to welcome us and help us get settled with our luggage! Super comfy beds and snuggly warm - Cannot wait to revisit soon!

Liked: Everything!

Selfishly, I almost didn’t want to leave a review for fear that it would contribute to this place being constantly booked up, making it harder for us to go back … it truly is a hidden gem!

Alison was a gorgeous host. She was fantastic with our two children who each have quite specific needs, kindly taking time to explain where things were and how things worked before leaving us to it.

The setting was idyllic and we particularly loved the fact that we had exclusive use of a secure, private field and woodland as we have an energetic Collie puppy.

Everything - inside and out, was clean, tidy and beautifully thought through with exceptional attention to detail - from a den building kit, nature and bird watching books, to gorgeous tree bark pencils. Our children loved the bell tent, and the caravan was surprisingly comfortable.

Tip - Other than maybe a few board games incase of wet weather (although there are still some provided), there really isn’t need to bring lots of stuff with you. We brought too much when actually our kids were perfectly happy frolicking in the woods for hours. It really is a wonderful opportunity to leave the ‘Switch’ at home and just feel enveloped by nature.

Thank you again. Couldn’t recommend more. ❤️

Disliked: Just the fact that we couldn’t have stayed longer.

Liked: Absolutely everything about it..Alison was so helpful and accommodating such an amazing lady..we loved the touring caravan the tent and the new arrival😊…having the whole field and woodland set away from everyone and everything is the best thing ever.seeing the wildlife all through the day with the peaceful surrounding is just heaven butterflies galore and seeing the owl at night.on arrival we had water, bread, scones hot chocolate and marshamallows as a little welcome pack which was absolutely so lovely.
Also there is numerous books, games and a den building kit which is all included, the thought that Alison has put into creating a whole experience without needing to go anywhere is so thoughtful and helpful.we definitely will be back as soon as we can just a wonderful time with my wife and children, even our nervous little dog loved roaming in the woods and jumping into between the grass trying to find us.Hide and seek with all that space we all thoroughly enjoyed as a family aswell.

Disliked: The fact we couldn’t stay longer

Local attractions

Coastal castles, little coves, seaside resorts and all sorts make up the 260-mile North Wales coast. Take off on the scent of scenic stretches along the coastal path or fix your attention upon one spot like Rhyl (35 minutes’ drive), Prestatyn (half an hour) or the dunes of Talacre (25 minutes). If you’re not too preoccupied tracking down all the golden sand, inland is historic Chester (35 minutes). With a complete Roman city wall circuit – the only one in the UK – and Tudor half-timber buildings, a Roman amphitheatre and a cathedral, you should have quite a history-filled day in store. The market town of Mold (15 minutes) must feature on your itinerary, of course, even if only to pick up picnic supplies. The town has two country parks nearby, including Loggerheads Country Park (20 minutes), which has a working corn mill and views of Moel Famau and the Clwydian Range, as well as a trail leading to the Offa’s Dyke Path.
