  • Adults-only luxury pod with kitchen five minutes’ drive from St Asaph
  • Rhyl 15 minutes’ drive; Llandudno half an hour; Chester 45 minutes
  • Hot tub and fluffy gowns; complimentary breakfast; mountain views
A welcoming bottle of sparkling wine waiting on ice is a rather splendid way to start your holiday, right? That’s what you get upon arriving at Dolafon Meadow, an adults-only site on a farm between Rhuddlan and the cathedral city of St Asaph (about five minutes’ drive to either), in Denbighshire. Sitting just off the A525, the site is within a five-minute drive of the North Wales Expressway, which puts many of the top sights of North Wales (and just across the English border) within easy reach: the beaches of Llandudno are a half-hour’s drive away, Bangor (and Chester) 45 minutes. Accommodation is in a glamping pod where, in addition to the welcome wine, you get lots of nifty little extras, including plenty of tea, coffee and sugar to keep you in hot brews during your stay, and cornflakes and pastries for breakfast. The kitchen area comes with a microwave oven with two hot plates, a kettle, a toaster and a fridge, so cooking a meal for two should be a cinch. (For supplies, head to Rhuddlan or St Asaph; there are also plenty of dining options there, should you decide that holidays are too short to spend them cooking…) Outside the pod are a fairy lights-adorned patio with views of the countryside and the mountains and a covered decked area with a hot tub. (Fluffy dressing gowns are provided, as are towels.)

Local attractions

If you fancy a day at the seaside, the nearest beach is at Rhyl (15 minutes’ drive), where a paved promenade skirts the vast expanse of sand. If you have a little extra time, head to Llandudno, where you can combine beachy activities with hiking adventures on the Great Orme headland. The long, Victorian-era Garth Pier at Bangor stretches close to the halfway point of the Menai Strait, bringing Anglesey tantalisingly close. Excellent views of the island can also be had from Nantporth North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, a former limestone quarry now restored to woodland, where you might spot oystercatchers and redshanks. Within the lush setting of Gwydir Forest Park, the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed (50 minutes) is the gateway to Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). Take the Tan Dinas Path, then continue on, following the river Afon Llugwy and taking in waterfalls such as dramatic Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls
