Pitch by the river

  • Nearly-wild camping... but with extras
  • Summer bar with games room (at weekends)
  • Free brown trout fishing in the site river
Non-campers who smugly say to you that camping is about roughing it should be pointed towards this site (forcibly, if need be). Glan Ceirw in Denbighshire is ‘nearly wild’ Welsh camping at its very peak (Wales has a lot of peaks) – riverside camping on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, but with some excellent mod cons for all guests. You’ll even be able to cast off for brown trout – free and with no licence required – in Glan Ceirw’s own river; just bring along your fishing equipment. Owners Pauline and Martin see no reason why tent campers shouldn't be treated to some homely treats, so Glan Ceirw counts among its facilities a snug summer bar (open on weekends; drinks only) adjoining a games room with pool table and football table. Glan Ceirw is in a valley location between the towns of Corwen and Betws-y-Coed, with mountain bike trails, cycle routes, peak scaling, forest walking and Bala Lake all nearby. Amenities including toilets, showers and a launderette are maintained to spotless standards, and the grounds are kept immaculate to encourage local wildlife (and small human guests). Glan Ceirw has no food shop on site, but a tasty farmers’ market is nearby where you can pick homemade and organic produce. You could even bring a jar of jam back for the non-camping cynic…

What customers say

This is a small, friendly campsite praised for its lovely riverside location, peaceful atmosphere, and welcoming, helpful owners. The site is considered good value and is popular with families due to its games room and proximity to Bala. While many enjoyed the scenic surroundings and on-site bar, some noted that toilet and shower facilities are basic and could benefit from refurbishment, and road noise can be an issue for some pitches.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked Overview: Myself and my two young children, had a fantastic stay at this campsite. It exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of affordability and natural beauty.

Location and Scenery: Chosen for its budget-friendly price and minimal light pollution, the campsite delivered breathtaking night skies. The highlight was stargazing - seeing the Milky Way and clusters like the Beehive with the naked eye was stunning. At home we need a telescope to see these and we brought a telescope but found it unnecessary. Watching the Perseid meteor shower’s remnants added magic to our evenings.

Activities: During the day, the kids loved playing in the stream, where small fish (possibly baby trout) nibbled dead skin from our feet—a unique, spa-like experience! The stream’s gentle sound also made nights incredibly peaceful and therapeutic.

Hospitality: The host was welcoming, greeting us on arrival and checking in to ensure our comfort. Their kindness enhanced our experience.

Overall: This campsite offered an unforgettable escape with natural beauty and tranquility. We’re already planning our return. (Photos to be added once downloaded from the camera.)

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked Beautiful location. Ideal for a nice couple of nights away. Short run to Bala which was just what we were looking for. We all enjoyed a little bit of fishing in the river, especially the little ones they had a blast!

Disliked Pitches are on a slight slope but other than that it's a good location

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked We had the best time. Camping on the edge of the river. It was quiet peaceful and so beautiful.
The children absolutely loved our stay.

Disliked The only thing we could have asked for was a toilet down by the tent area. It was all the way by the main gate. But this did not spoil or hinder our trip.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked Everything, exceptional value for money, wholesome camping site. The site is clean and tidy and the compact size makes it quick and easy to get to the shower block.
It's not a large site which makes for a more relaxed experience site, the owners are very friendly and always willing to help.
It was nice that they have a conservatory / games room that the campers can use.

Local attractions

Bala Lake, Betws-y-Coed, Coed Llandegla Forest and Snowdonia National Park are all nearby, for enough activities of all sorts to keep you busy for weeks. Start off among at the Conwy Valley Railway Museum’s miniature railway at Betws-y-Coed, then take a riverside walk along the Llugwy and on to the spectacular Swallow Falls via the River Conwy; if you don’t fancy the walk, settle down at the picnic areas overlooking the Pont-y-Pair Falls in the centre of the village. Activity centres are within easy driving distance, like the one at Wales’s biggest body of water, Bala Lake, which has a huge range of outdoor options including whitewater rafting, zorbing and canoeing. On land, horse riding, quad biking and dry slope skiing are all available, or you could follow in the footsteps of thousands (millions?) and scale some of the peaks of Snowdonia (promise yourself a picnic and a Glan Ceirw ale at the top). If it’s heritage (and a rest) you’re after, two vintage steam railways are nearby – one at Bala and one at Llangollen – while in the national park the kids can dig into Welsh mining history with trips to Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Llechwedd Slate Cavern and the National Slate Museum.
