  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Heron's Nest on-site touring caravan

Liked: We stayed in the Heron’s Nest, which is a caravan with a double bed and bunk beds. It was clean and really cute! The owners were lovely and very welcoming.

Disliked: There was only one pillow per person on the beds - I think there should be two. The food at the pub was ok - a bit overpriced for the portion size you receive.

Otter cabin (four person)

Liked: The cabin was lovely, plenty of space for me and my 3 year old, and the bed was comfy. An amazing setting next to the river and the pub was perfect - friendly for me and a young child to have a drink. We did the animal experience and my daughter loved it so much, Rich and Molly were great with her and she was desperate to talk to them whenever she saw them around afterwards. All in all a great place to spend a couple of nights with wonderful hosts in a beautiful place.

Poppy's Patch bell tent (six person)

Liked: We booked this last minute night away for our family of 5 and it was wonderful.

The site is more picturesque in real life than the photos. Waking up the sound of the river, crossing the Ford to get on the site and sat drinking a coffee on the river bank were all incredible.

Our boys are 11, 9 and 4. They enjoyed feeding the chickens, playing in the paths behind the site and paddling in the river.

There's a picnic area, football pitch and park a 5 min walk away and its worth popping your head in the beautiful church across the river too.

There was plenty of room for us in the tent....the temperature had dropped and we were glad to have taken some extra bed covers.....(we are not regular campers)

We bought some fire wood and had some fun with marshmallows to see out the night.

The food in the pub was great, we had burgers, lasagne, soup and a couple of the kids meals. We even stayed for a game of pool and dessert.

The compost toilets were clean and fresh and we loved the little educational signs to explain to the childrew how everything works.

Poppy's Patch bell tent (six person)

Liked: We stayed for one night in Poppys bell tent, and it was absolutely lovely! On arrival a member of staff took us down and shown us where everything was on site, they also booked us a table at the pub for our tea.
The children especially enjoyed feeding the alpacas, sheep and chickens.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked: Bike packing with a small tent. Very welcoming. Lovely hosts running a good pub. Site, by the river, is very picturesque. Had a cooling swim after many hours on the bike. Good food. Several different glamping options.

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
