  • Quiet campsite with Eryri views 15 minutes’ drive from Betws-y-Coed
  • Adventure Parc Snowdonia and Zip World Llechwedd half an hour’s drive
  • Lakeside pitches behind a traditional pub with dining and a games room
Like the sound of holidaying under canvas with a backdrop of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) peaks? Haste ye to the Y Giler Arms, a traditional country inn just off the A5 (a former coaching route), for tucked behind the pub is a camping field overlooking a lake and edged by the meanders of the River Merddwr. For exercise junkies, this peaceful spot is close to the outdoor-sports hub of Betws-y-Coed (15 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stay put and drift around on site, the pub opens every evening, where you can be sure of a warm Welsh welcome along with local real ales and home-cooked food served in the lakeside restaurant. Hot breakfasts are also available – just be sure to order yours from the bar the night before – and there are plenty of distractions if the kids get restless, from a darts board and pool table to a variety of board games for you to borrow. Any accompanying dogs are welcome in the public bar and games room, but must be kept on a lead and under close control at all times on the camping field, as it is surrounded by farmland with lots of grazing sheep. And finally, a few practicalities: the site comprises two acres of level pitches, with easy access for towing vehicles. Facilities include modern shower blocks (one with disabled access), a washing-up area, electric hook-ups and water points.

Liked: The views and the onsite pub

Disliked: The unorganized self check-in and the lack of facilities (toilets/showers) constant queues, no hand wash and run out of toilet roll.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Excellent view and proximity to Y Giller Arms pub with nice menu, dog friendly and well kept Snowdonia Ale. Very prompt and friendly interaction with pub staff over arrangements for booking for dinner in bar area. Staff in pub were very helpful but not so well informed on the campsite aspects.

Disliked: No guidance on where to pitch and no registration process or any real coordination with pub staff. Only two toilet-sink-shower-combined units for camping and touring fields together- which was completely inadequate. Toilets at pub could have been made available to reduce congestion but nobody was available at the pub in the mornings despite claiming on Pitchup that breakfasts are available (so had assumed staff might have been around in the mornings). Dishwashing facility was also not available when we were there. General problem was lack of staff available to help with any of the above aspects.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice clean facilities. Nice view of sheep field to wake up to.

Disliked: Quite close to a main road as could hear it but that’s the only not so positive. Wasn’t loud just could hear it.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nestled in the stunning Welsh countryside, this campsite offers views so breathtaking they could be framed and sold as postcards. The pub staff were as warm and welcoming as the hearty meals they served—seriously, the food was top-notch. Breakfast, in particular, was a proper feast, fueling us up perfectly for the long journey home. And let’s talk about the shower blocks—clean, toasty, and with showers that actually deliver decent pressure (a rare luxury in the camping world). After a long day of karting, they were nothing short of glorious.

Disliked: Wash station was not in use as advertised, but that's it really.
