  • Friendly site on a farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Just over a mile's walk to pubs in Talybont-on-Usk
  • Meet the farm animals on site; bike hire available
Bed down in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and have yourself a slice of proper Powys farm life while you’re at it too. Coity Bach is a welcoming and friendly rural site on a farm just over a mile from the pretty little village of Talybont-on-Usk. Budding farmhands can get stuck into various tasks on site, helping out with the goats and horses, while those in search of more relaxing times can simply settle down in a serene setting for idle hours on site. Either way, it’s worth staying awake until after dark if you can: there’s some great stargazing to be done here, and barbecues and campfires are both allowed to keep you warm while you do just that. Off site, this is a popular place for hill walking, and town wanders are easily accessible at nearby Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye and Crickhowell. It's excellent terrain for cycling too: hire a bike on site or have your own spruced up at the cycle shop in the village. As for sprucing yourself up too, communal amenities on site include showers, toilets, a laundry area and a drying room; there are also charging and recycling facilities, and local produce for sale. If you are indeed planning a barbecue or picnic (or just need snacks) the nearest big town for supplies is Brecon, 15 minutes’ drive away. To eat out, four pubs are within a mile and a half at Talybont-on-Usk.

Ty Bach Twt 1 bedroom lodge (hot tub)

Liked: Welcomed by owner on arrival and shown to accomodation which was warm, clean and tastefully decorated with everything and more than we needed, also plenty of leaflets and info on surrounding area. There was even a fire lit in outside fire pit so able to relax immediatly.Had the most fantastic tasty breakfast in morning with products bought from farm reared animals, eggs from the chickens that roamed and owners vegetable garden. We were then able to feed the animals that roamed the vast farmland which was a true delight.Me and my husband then followed the woodland walk that can be accessed directly from property, hearing the birds sing and the red kites flying above us.i could not have chosen a better break than this as service was one I wish everyone could adhere to.

Disliked: Not being able to stay longer

Ty Bach Twt 1 bedroom lodge (hot tub)

Liked: On reflection there wasn't anything I would put as a 'like'

Disliked: The location of the cabin is difficult to access due to steep steps with no hand rail. Hot tub hadn't been turned on before our arrival so was Luke warm at best. Whole cabin could do with a make over. Signs of wear tear and dirt. Kitchen is far too cluttered with way too many appliances and mis matched crockery. Extractor fans both not working which would of helped with cooking smells. Lack of any sort of view. Either rear of farmhouse or trees overhead. Cleaner need to pay attention to detail when turning the rooms round. Grime found in numerous places and if you ignore the amount of scrap lying around... And finally the electrics are suspect... Not too sure if there is a certificate to say they are safe... Live terminals in a room with a shower... Definitely a fail!!! Given the option to use the hot tub in the barn. Had a look. That was a definite no.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: The whole place made u feel like your part of the farm life family. The facilities are clean and there within short walk , the animals are friendly and it’s nice to be with them as it feels like wild camping . Staff were lively helped with getting wood and supplies , lovely view , amazing walks and hikes to do around , including a water fall. There’s a bike shop to hire mountain bikes, there’s a cafe writhing short drive or 30 minute walk , as well as a shop that open quite early.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: The views were amazing and worth walking/driving up the field for. Perfect location to drive to tourist spots around Brecon Beacons with Talybont on Usk only a couple minutes drive and 20-30ish mins to the variety of Pen Y Fan/Four Waterfalls car parks.

Although I saw other reviews mentioned the facilities being dirty, this was not the case for us and for the price we were pleased that the showers were free, and additional items e.g. microwave, kettle and laundry was also on offer to us.

It is worth noting that you need to call the contact number when you arrive as it is a working farm and the staff won’t know when you arrive but once you call the friendly and helpful staff will come to you and explain how everything at the site works which was great.

If you’re an animal lover this is a great place to camp as there are friendly farm dogs, cats, pigs, ponies, cows etc to pet/feed as they roam the fields.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful views, friendly animals wondering about, relaxed on where you can pitch and are allowed fires and BBQs. Very friendly and helpful staff prior to and during our stay. Was able to bring car next to tent even though we were advised initially this wouldn’t be possible. Were offered the opportunity to change our booking to a different date due to weather without any additional charge.

Disliked: Unfortunately the cleanliness lets this place down. The showers and toilets were filthy. There was no toilet roll or soap. We knew it was a working farm and were not expecting anything fancy but it really was unclean in the toilets and shower.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: Easy to find and conveniently located to hit the trails in Brecon Beacons (we did Pen y Fan horseshoe and Four Falls Trails, 15 and 30min drive respectively). In the campsite, plenty of space to choose from to set the tent up and great views. Relaxed vibe - lots of groups of different ages but everyone super respectful of others. Facilities (bathroom/showers) were clean at all times.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Being in the Brecon Beacons, this is naturally excellent hillwalking territory – you can head straight out onto paths directly from the farm, or ask your hosts for tips on local routes including the Taff Trail, Henry Vaughan walk and Usk Valley Walk. If you’re trying to tick off a mountain or two, make a beeline for Pen y Fan (20 minutes’ drive) or the Sugar Loaf (35 minutes) For a bigger variety of alfresco activities, head to Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) for rock climbing, watersports and horse riding outings. Closer by, Cantref Adventure Farm (15 minutes) has riding lessons and horseback treks, plus all sorts of family antics including crazy golf, tractor rides and Europe’s longest sledge ride (oh, and pig racing…) The natural scenery around here is spectacular, of course – and the towns are pretty too. Crickhowell (20 minutes), Abergavenny (half an hour) and bookshop-filled Hay-on-Wye (35 minutes) are all worth a wander.
